Front Page: The Only Twins-Yankees History That Might Actually Matter

Recommended Posts

Time to end the damn curse. They just need to pitch at the front end and I think we win. I have faith our best bullpen guys can do it.

Need to get to their starters though. Their bullpen is even better than ours has been once you shrink it down and only use their top guys.

Something will also likely happen in that stadium. It has every other time. Bad call, cheap HR, something. They need to play through it and no implode when it happens. Win 1 there and they are in good shape.

The series will be interesting, as both teams have made a few changes since last meeting.  I hope the new bullpen for the Twins can get it done, else there will be a lot of late game blow ups that piss me off.  At least with instant replay the umps can only give the Yankees so much of an advantage

Oh please.  We have lost the last 10 post season games against this team and we are 2-13 against them in post season games this century.  We have a ridiculously terrible record against them since Gardy took over the team in 2002.  To complain about umpires is ludicrious.

If you want to complain about things then complain about how gutless this team has played against the Yankees over the last almost 20 seasons.  Complain about how this team cannot hit in the postseason against the Yankees. Complain about how we have scored 4 runs or less in 13 of the 15 post season games we have played against them.

As for the Phil Cuzzi abomination, we aren't in that situation if Joe Nathan doesn't spit the bit in the 9th.  THen he had the nerve to complain about the umpiring after that.  He needed to just own it and say "that doesn't happen if I do my job".  Totally unacceptable from Nathan right there and it gives you an idea of the mindset Gardy helped to foster.  THat is the kind of attitude I hope no longer exists in the Twins clubhouse.

Maybe we can put this ridiculousness to sleep.  I am pretty damn tired of watching it

The Ringer tackled this, detailing the Twins 21st century ineptitude against the Yankees.

It is kind of painful to read, but depending on where you fall in the Science vs. Magic debate, I'd say the Twins are due for some serious regression to the mean here.

Can't deny the fact that we are 36-126 against this team since 2002.  They are NOT that much better.  We only acted like they were and that BS needs to stop now

I 100 percent agree that when Gardy led the team they rolled over against the Yankees and just let the Yankees have their way with the Twins.  I do not expect the same under Rocco.  Rocco does things like look at stats against players, not just say well he is our guy.  Anyone could have managed the Twins like Gardy did, he went on auto and gave no thought at all.  Rocco and his team they change things based on data.

I was not blaming the umpire for the Twins short comings over the years.  I was pointing out fact that things like that will not be a factor anymore either, and they compounded the inept managing of Gardy.  The majority of my post was about how the history of the matchups do not have any bearing on this matchup.  Other than the few players from the wild-card game couple years ago, who was on the team last time Twins played in a full post season series?  Single game play in is not same as best of 5.

We are not very far apart in our thinking.  Rocco is nothing like Gardy and maybe that is what we need.  I also think this team is every bit as good as the Yankees.  I think it goes five games

Two of the three most watched World Series in history are still 1987 and 1991. Which featured 0 teams from the north east, California, Texas or Chicago. Ratings for the World Series now are so bad it’s embarrassing. Fewer people watched the last TWO combined than watched in 1991.

Doesn't change the fact that the national media drools over the big market teams, as do the advertisers.. A lot has changed since 1991 in the demographics of what and how people watch. A Yanks-Dodgers WS will get ratings..a Tampa-Atl will not. Even if on a relative scale, they will be a lot worse than in days of yore.

This got me curious. Interesting to note that the Subway Series between Yanks and Mets only averaged 18M...a relatively small number considering the market. Perhaps it turned off many viewers outside of NY?

Compare that with the Bay Area series between SF and Oakland in 1989...that averaged 24M. Also it looks like it was after the disastrous strike of 1994..that the numbers began to drop. That also coincides with the explosion of the internet, followed by cable and streaming and all the other stuff that they never had to deal with up to that time. The Twins series in 87 and 91 came before all of that. In fact I'm thinking most the playoff games were seen on non-pay TV back then too.

Anyway...fun stuff.
