Front Page: Twins Game Recap (8/27): Bullpen Depth Proves Key In Twins Win

Recommended Posts

Duffey didn't look that great last night, for what it's worth. He got the job done but he was not sharp and got out of the inning on a line drive shot.

As for Marwin, here's Rocco's take: "It’s abdominal, I would call it abdominal, maybe possibly oblique area but he was moving around OK," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. "The tests came back as showing, I don’t know if it’s the best way to describe it, but something probably small. Not something that we would consider major but something that we’re going to have to look after and get checked out."

Marwin said he got out of the game before it got worse, which seems like a smart move.

Twins are likely going to have an all lefty outfield tonight against a lefty pitcher.

I wish Rosario had swung his "patented base hit swing" in the first inning with Polanco on third and Cruz on first.

Since we won, I’ll just chalk this up to you can’t have it all. :)

While that would have been a nice way to get the run scoring going, we were up against Giolito. I think Eddie came through at a better time though. At least in this game.

The addition of both Romo and Dyson really deepens the bullpen. The newfound competence of Duffey and May makes the whole 'pen look much better.

I definitely feel better about the back end being manned by Rogers, Romo, Dyson, May, and Duffey than mixing in Harper, Magill, and Morin. Romo in particular has been terrific and combining his experience with these results is all to the good.

Interesting and tense game last night. I was really wondering if Rocco was going to send Pineda back out in the 6th. On the one hand, Big Mike was pitching well. On the other, it's a tight game and one bad pitch might tie it up or lose it for you. On the other hand, he was only at 88 pitches. On the other hand, he hasn't thrown 100 pitches in a game all year. On the other hand, it would have really been nice to get one more inning and not run through all your best bullpen guys in one night. On the other hand...man, that's a lot of hands.

The problem with hands is, you only have room for two major points before you have to switch to feet. On the other elbow, if joints don't sound right, you could have problems. On the other knee, I suppose they are transitions between bones, which, if we require several, are much more numerous than hands. If we carefully scrape out the marrow of this topic, it's about options. We could chew the fat for days about that.

Anyway, Big Mike looks like he could plow snow with fastballs. I like that in a man.

If the Yankees do pass the Twins for the record HR in a season mark this year, (I don't think they will), then one thing is sure: You won't hear another word about juiced balls or any of that for the rest of the season and playoffs. You can take that to the bank! It is so obnoxious as a Twins fan. Oh, and in football, I'm a Buffalo Bills fan so I have to deal with that too, how the media talks constantly about my ultimate rival Patriots.

What are you?  An octopus?

Pineda seems to have gone 5-6 innings most of the year, if he goes out for the 6th and gives up the lead the commentary here is much different and questioning why he wasn't pulled sooner.  I think it's a fine line of when to leave a pitcher in and when to pull him.  Always easier to dissect the decision after the fact.

The bullpen has been much stronger lately weather that's due to weaker opponents or just pitching better I'm not sure.

Either way keep it up and go Twins!!

It is a fine line and old as the ages.     The commentary here is much different and questioning if Duffey gives up runs also.    No manager can overcome hindsight when things don't work out.   It is quite possible that leaving Pineda in would be fine and replacing him would be fine.   It is also possible that leaving Pineda in or replacing him would result in runs.   Personally, I don't love relying on 5 pitchers (including the starter) being on.    I would like some one like May (or Graterol) come in and if they look good keep them in for two innings.    Also like it when Rogers comes in for two innings.    Then you would have all the others ready if one of those two falter and if they don't falter then you have Duffey, Romo, Dyson and and Graterol the next night.

Bills fans exist?
