Hamilton is intriguing but he’s not 1.9 million reasons intriguing.

I’m not one to defend not spending money but it shouldn’t be impossible to fill that incredibly specific role with a minor leaguer is it’s that important to the team.

But on a minimum deal, sure, I’d take Hamilton.

I'm not sure why the salary matters.

The Twins don't carry payroll savings over year to year, so it wouldn't affect next year's budget (unless they account the $1m buyout into next year's payroll).

If this year's payroll is maxed out, then ok, I guess it can't be done, but if there is still room, then they might as well use it.

It's really moot anyway, since he didn't even make it to the Twins in the waiver priority, but philosophically, I'm not sure why the salary should matter.

It doesn’t really matter to anyone but the owners. My point is that if I was managing a business and responsible for payroll, I wouldn’t just spend money because I can.

And at $1.9m, I’d personally have a hard time justifying acquiring Hamilton for six weeks.

That seems like an easy amount to justify, if you think a SB or two in the postseason is valuable.

The money should have been a non factor, IFAM.

I don’t know of anyone in the system that could other than Royce Lewis and I’m pretty sure the Twins aren’t going to add him to the roster. Nick Gordon isn’t an OFer, but I suppose he could be a pinch runner.

Any specific suggestions? 80-grade speed guys don't exactly grow on trees. Gabriel Maciel (70) is our only guy above 60 speed at Fangraphs, and he'd have to jump from high-A right now (and be added to the 40-man roster a year earlier than necessary).

Ouch. Wade is only a 50, I thought he was faster than that.

We don't need an 80 speed (and is Hamilton really still an 80 speed?), only a fast guy who can go first to third, or second to home, which is more likely to be necessary than a stolen base.

I thought Royce Lewis had 80 speed.

60 at Fangraphs. 70 at MLB (not sure if MLB inflates some components like they inflate overall FV, though).

Of course, even if he is fast enough (although he hasn't played outfield as a pro), adding him now still has long-term 40-man / Rule 5 implications, as opposed to Hamilton who you can set free after the season/postseason.

Well, sure, but the comment is more about the price versus utility of the player.

Especially on the Twins, who can roll out a dislocated shoulder Buxton and get basically the same guy as a healthy Hamilton.

What good is the utility of the money right now? There is literally nowhere else for this club to spend $2 mil in 2019.

And you'd really be cool with the Twins putting Buxton out in the field and on the bases with an unhealed dislocated shoulder, just to save $2 mil on Hamilton? I'm no injury expert, but getting Buxton's shoulder to heal and avoiding it becoming a more serious injury could be worth a good chunk of that $2 mil, no?

That said, I didn't expect Hamilton to get claimed, and I don't necessarily know whether Hamilton would be a worthwhile addition to the Twins. But, if you determine that you want him or that kind of player, the $2 mil shouldn't be much of a hurdle at this point.

Maybe the Twins did put in a claim and the priority just didn't make it to us.

Yup, that is possible too. Although I wouldn't be surprised if the Braves were the only club to put in a claim either.

I'm not trying to judge the actual move/non-move (personally I don't think I would have claimed him, even if I though he might be useful). Just addressing the theoretical cost issue.

Generally I agree that $1.9M is probably not worth it for what you'd use Billy Hamilton for. The most likely scenario is that he helps in a few spots but nothing that's going to effect the outcome of the season, or the playoffs.

BUT, there is a non-zero chance that his presence on defense or on the bases is THE thing that puts us over the top.

My confusion isn't so much with the front office, but what seems like half the people on this website that were against having him on the team. I can't, for the life of me, figure out that opinion.
