Front Page: Is It Time To Platoon C.J. Cron?

Recommended Posts

If you're removing Cron from the lineup to insert Garver...probably worth a try.

If Cron is healthy and simply slumping...

Removing Cron from the lineup to insert Gonzalez or Adrianza...beware the small sample size trap. Those moves would be unlikely to help offensively over the longer term. And none of the options are likely to improve the infield defense materially...maybe the opposite.

Putting Garver at first essentially bats Castro for Cron. I don't see how that's an improvement.

Basically, your best plan is to have Marwin’s bat replace Cron’s. As mentioned in the article the wRC difference is 7. Is it worth it to get more players playing out of position?

Maybe I’m missing something, but is offense a problem for this team? Defense sure is. But I’m not sure taking out a guy who’s probably played 1b (and only 1b) for the last 10 years and replacing him with someone who has very little experience there is the way to go.

I keep playing Cron, maybe lower in the order. The Twins are going to need him at the top of his game to get into postseason and certainly if they make it in. That’s not going to happen with him riding the pine. It’s a completely different situation with Schoop. Someone who plays his position is scorching the ball. No one who you can really call a first baseman is doing well enough to take time away from Cron IMO.

I thought the Twins were being more intelligent this season with the Injured List, but it looks like they're pushing it too much with Cron. If the man's thumb ain't right, then let him rest it until it is. As mentioned, Sano can play 1B while several other guys can play 3B at least as well, and Sano's glove at 1B seems about even with Cron's right now.

Are there reports that his thumb is still injured?

Cron's play is sure a reminder that a baseball season is a marathon and not a sprint. He provided quality play in the first half of the season. I am guessing he won't be back next year. It appears time to start phasing him out. Could be a useful bat off the bench for now, or perhaps they should let him go.
