Twins sign Ryan O'Rourke

Recommended Posts

Dumpster diving is what happens when you poorly construct your bullpen in the off season;....

....and wait until the last minute to try to obtain reinforcements at the deadline

....and fail to see alarm signs and/or work a physical into the terms of a trade

.... and overall think that you were not going to have to pay a premium at the trade deadline in an when there are TWO wildcards to chase and and only one early trade deadline.

None of the above should be surprising and the disaster was anticipated in advance by numerous people on TD

Is there a way to characterize your frustration without equating a human to trash?

O'Rourke has always been tough on lefties.  A good addition to Rochester and a possible September call up if Rocco would use him correctly.

If he had that much potential, seems strange that the Mets would not have kept him for their wild card race

For his major league career lefties are hitting .132/.268/.235 against him.  The problem is control, especially to right handed hitters.  He would have a niche if a team had room to carry a guy who would face a tough lefty or two.

No human should be equated to trash. That is not perspective.

"Dumpster diving" is a common enough expression that, by itself, I don't think it's really "equating a human to trash".

Moderator's note: While jorgenswest's point in general is well taken, there ought to be separation of the human side of the game from the business decisions a front office makes, and from a site moderation standpoint I think spycake's position represents my view on the phrase most of the time when it comes up, that it's a front office looking for cheap contracts. In any case, please let's not continue this tangent in a thread about a player's signing.

All teams make minor league signings like this, I don’t see how it can be considered dumpster diving.

O’Rourke is lethal against lefties but turns righties into Barry Bonds. With the new rule change coming, his usefulness is going out the window.

The only question is - does he have value.  He has been in 56 games, has a 4.84 ERA, 49 strikeouts in 48 innings and 56 appearances. His whip is 1.283.  He sounds just like all the guys we have been calling up.  His value is that he is a lefty.  Not exciting, but not bad, especially for our minor leagues.
