The problem with Warne's tweet is, if Rogers was available...and we know he was...its a three run lead, Rogers is the guy you've decided gets the 9th with a 3 run lead.

You put Rogers out there to start the 9th.

If Rogers cant be used 3 days in a row, what was he doing out there today?

A three run lead and they only needed to get three outs against one of the worst offenses in baseball.

I can't fault Rocco for trying to get by without using Rogers for a 3rd straight day.

He used him anyway, and

Then use somebody else, just not arrived-in-5th-inning-guy.

Is he though? Without looking at his usage, I suspect you can count the number of times he’s come into that situation on one hand.

who has gotten a 9th inning save opportunity other than Rogers since the AS break?

Other than, uh, new guy.

That wasn’t the situation you specified.

btw, Rogers has entered a game in the 9th with no one on and a 3 (or more) run lead 4 times in 2019. In one, he did not finish the game. Ryne Harper did. One was against the Yankees in which he had not pitched in 4 days. There was another against the Jays where he had not pitched for 3 days. The other was against the Indians and I seem to recall universal support for the decision to use him against the division rival in hostile territory. Rogers hasn’t been used as a traditional closer all year. I suspect that to continue. Indeed, trying to use someone else with a 3 run lead seems to support that hypothesis, no?

One last thought on Roccos's managerial chops. There isn't a lot to go on so far. The Twins spent the first half of the season amassing wins with very large margins. The offense was so dominant anyone who could put 9 names on a sheet of paper could have won during that time. Once the games tighten, the hitters start to press a little, and a limited BP needs daily massaging one can get a better handle on his talents, or lack thereof. I will repeat what I have said before. While good managers possibly don't "win" many games, bad managers lose quite a few. There are things I like about him so far, and things I don't. But I can't say either opinion outweighs the other at this time.

That's the exact situation I specified. 3 run lead or less, Rogers gets the 9th. He's been the closer for weeks now. Pretty sure I even remember Rogers getting the 9th with a 4 run lead.

Who was the last pitcher to start the 9th in a save situation other than Rogers?

I think you're both a little bit correct and a little bit incorrect.

Clearly no one else has had a save in a long time (to me it looks like the last non-Rogers save was Parker back on June 22).  For better or worse, Baldelli had refused to give anyone a chance to try to protect a 3 run lead at the end of a ball game in a long, long time.

That said, you also asked who was the last pitcher to start the 9th in a save situation other than Rogers, and you may be surprised that even Rogers himself has only done that himself only four times(!!!) over the last seven weeks(!!!).  Baldelli very rarely brings in a new pitcher in a traditional closer setting like you mentioned (start of the 9th with less than 3 runs).

Instead, what Baldelli has done is bring in Rogers into a few non-save situations in the 9th (which a traditional closer doesn't do) and he also saved a few games from the 7th and 8th inning on (which a traditional closer doesn't do).

Perhaps semantic points, but then yours was a semantic (if also rhetorical) question :)

He ran Dyson - a National League pitcher - out against a National League team.  If anyone should have some familiarity with the opposing hitters and have an idea about how to get them out, it would be someone like Dyson.

Obviously, it didn't work, so that makes it a "bad move" ...

Was last night's Dyson meltdown also Baldelli's fault in some way?

EDIT: Silly me. I just read the game recap. Of course it's still Baldelli's fault.

It's "Sports Fan Logic 101" .... "If it doesn't work, it was a stupid idea."

Sports fans - of every team - love to tell you what a moron their coach/manager is AFTER they know things didn't go well.

See how many of them will "call it" that way before they know how it turned out, though ... *crickets*

Moderator's note: All right, I understand the temptation, but let's not make this be about fellow posters, or vague groups of "sports fans". Counter an opinion you disagree with, with something better.

Just a housekeeping note here - many of us didn't like how Pineda was removed early from this game as he was just at 81 pitches, but with Pineda hitting the IL, is it possible he was removed early due to the triceps injury? Just a thought.

Seems unlikely given that he didn’t hit the IL until two days after his start.

Theoretically, it could be something that bothered him a little on Thursday, and didn't go away / get better on Friday/Saturday as expected, which prompted the IL move.
