Front Page: 2019 Minnesota Twins Trade Deadline Recap

Recommended Posts

He's a rookie... So not only is he cheap for the next 3 seasons, giving the Marlins no reason to shed his salary, the cost to get him will be exorbitant.

Was it that high? Jazz Chisholm batting .204 in AA....

And yet Arizona gave up their #1 prospect for him rated number 59 in the top 100 on MLB site. He held a potent Twins offense to two runs. Maybe a lucky night but it seems like he made believers out of Arizona. Maybe he does turn back into a pumpkin or maybe he is the next Kluber hard to say I don't know much about Gallen but he impressed in the one game I saw him and Arizona obviously sees value in his arm so it makes me wonder.

Sure, but we can only go in circles with that kind of thinking. Maybe Jaylin Davis turns into Barry Bonds. I’m not saying Gallen is a bad prospect. Obviously he isn’t. Kirilloff just has way more upside, so swapping one for the other would very likely set the Twins back.

With the trading deadline now behind them, I expect the FO to begin focusing on starting pitching for 2020.  Although extending players during the season has not been something the Twins are known for, I would hope they take a hard look at it this year.

Gibson has indicated he would consider an extension several times.  Odorizzi also made a statement to that possibility recently.  I don't know if I am in left field, but I will be surprised if we don't see them extend one of the three (Gibson, Odorizzi or Pineda) before the season ends.  Extend a second during the dead period after the year and they will be fine in 2020.  As to they would extend, not even going to guess on that one.

Maybe someone has said this already, but Kirilloff would have been a terrible piece to give up for Gallen. Gallen is a back end top 100 guy. Kirilloff is by consensus in the top 30. Maybe each team thinks of them differently, but from what we know Kirilloff is a much, much better prospect.

FWIW, Kirilloff has slid to 40th at Fangraphs and 43rd at BP. Still probably more valuable than Gallen, although the gap has narrowed a fair amount in 2019. If we had an immediate need in the rotation, I think one would have to consider it.

Also, a young controllable starting pitcher would be more valuable to the Twins than a corner outfielder who is fighting internally with 5 other legit corner outfielders for position in a lineup that doesn't project to have room for any of them this year or next.

For everyone wishing the Twins had traded some of their elite prospects for player X, they are missing one thing. By not trading them, they remain in the organization.

Granted, prospect A, B or C could slide due to lack of performance. That is a risk, a real risk. But they also may maintain their status or even get better. Regardless, prospects A, B and C remain members of the organization. That means they are an asset that the Twins can trade in the future, whether that is this coming winter, next July or thereafter. With players like Lewis, Kirilloff and Graterol, they could be worth even more in the future.

Trade for whom? The idea that the right players will be available in the future seems suspect to me. It's on of the issues of not signing Keuchel.... Other starters were not available. This idea that they can just trade for guys when needed seems suspect to me.

As for what they did, it was fine. Let's see how Dyson does outside SF.... But they needed RP, and they got two. Hopefully they got the right two.

This is somewhat off topic but there has been a lot of talk about trading prospects so we don't lose them this winter to the rule 5 draft.

Does anyone know what prospects have to be added to the 40 man roster this offseason? Also, where can I find this information?

Fangraphs had an article on this. They feel the twins are in no danger. I even asked for classification, and one of the authors was certain it was no issue.

They also added roster resource to their site, which is amazing for answering questions like yours.

I think you missed my point, Mike.  I don't know who will be available, or when.  But players will become available.  And whenever someone is available, having players A, B and C will put the Twins in a good position to swing a deal.  Had they traded players A, B and/or C, they would no longer have that ammunition available.

I've never really looked at Fangraphs and it has a ton of information.  Thanks, this is extremely helpful.

They could be worth more, or they could be worth less. (With the usual caveat that we are talking about people so obviously we wish them well.)

Do you remember when Pittsburgh was shopping Gerrit Cole? And who the Twins better prospects were at that time? Is that a trade you would try to negotiate in hindsight?

I think they were asking for Kepler, Rogers, Arraez and Garver.    :)  I am kidding but if you think about it that could easily have been the package.

My point is that I don't think you can count on players being available, at the position you need, the exact time you need them. Which is why Chief and I argue to add talent when you can.

And no, not to sell the whole farm to do so. Neither of us has ever said that.

I really don't understand why you had to jump into this discussion.  I didn't say anything about what you seem intent on arguing about.  My point was and is simple....by not trading them yesterday, they are still on the team and provide value in the future.  If I understand the point you seem to want to argue about, that there will never be anyone available to trade for, then you are correct, my comment was stupid.

I don't think your comment was stupid. I think the league is changing a lot right now, and that no one knows just how hard it will be too trade in the future. I could be wrong, maybe more vets are traded in the off season, as teams value prospects more? I think it's an interesting analysis at this point.

And yet, no one got them. And there were plenty of teams that wanted pitching. I'm not sure what the reasons were, but someone was offering something for them (most likely) and here they are all still on the same teams. I'm just saying maybe it isn't the Twins FO that is to blame. Maybe it's the sellers miscalculating player values?

Curioser and curioser.

A few of the teams at the top just have nothing to trade. All of the decent talent they have is already in the majors. Yankees, Red Sox, Brewers, Cubs, etc.

I agree. I stand by my prediction that Gibson signs after the season for 3 years at 35-40m total, Odorizzi accepts a QO or goes 2 years, 25-30m, and Pineda moves on to a big market team. Thorpe, Smeltzer, and Stewart fight for the 5th spot and Thorpe wins.

I feel like the Twins are not the type of team that does QOs. Unless Odorizzi lays eggs the rest of the year, he probably chases after cash elsewhere.

Gibson might prefer to stick around, I don't know. Pineda, yeah he's gone.

That’s fair. Gallen is a few years older, though, and his service clock is already ticking. If the Twins hypothetically wanted him and we’re willing to offer up Kirilloff, I just think they should demand a lot more than Gallen on his own. But, the deadline passed and this is all just intellectual.

All's fair in love and war.

And the Indians couldn't get Bauer out of Cleveland fast enough.

The Twins, at the very least, should have made a very serious inquiry on Bauer.

How do you know they didn’t. They probably called.

The Indians are not selling. They took from pitching for two major league ready OF. Puig and Reyes.

What is the Twins equivalent. Rosario and Kepler? Cave isn’t Puig or Reyes.

They’d Like Kiriloff I’m sure... who wouldn’t but they want the bats now.

I’m sure the Twins inquired but based on the return. The Twins won’t be a match.

The Twins are having an historic year offensively. Very, very impressive. They could, and should, win the division. But beyond that? I fear we won't get past the first round of the playoffs once again. I just don't think we have the pitching quality (starters or relievers) to compete with the top shelf teams. Sign. Same old story.

Every playoff team should have the same fear. If the Yankees Astros and Dodgers don’t have that fear they have forgotten the ghosts of the past.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. I was talking about getting Callen from MIA. He's doing quite well this season so far in his rookie season. I don't see Miami trading him.

Gallen was traded yesterday...for Jazz Chisholm.

One point:  the trade for Dyson was not mutually exclusive to adding additional pitching talent.  The prospects we gave up were middle level prospects.  We still had Lewis, Kirilloff, Rooker, Gordon, Larnach, all of our pitching prospects, and many others that could have been used to obtain a starting pitcher.

ALthough I have been hard on our front office and ownership, in this case my guess is that all of the demands for these players was at a level we all would have turned down.  For example, I would give up one of Lewis and Kirilloff, but not both and for sure not both AND Buxton.

I don't think service clock would be an issue, for a team in our position. We're contenders right now, Gallen is in MLB right now, and he still has 6 years of team control after this season. (And even more if you have to option him in the future, although ideally he'd stick in MLB -- but he does have all 3 option years left if the need arose.)

Now, I don't know Gallen from Adam. He's had a good year, but only 35 innings so far in MLB -- is he a better bet going forward than Smeltzer? I don't know.
