Zack Wheeler to IL so no "live audition" for him at Target Field this week

The "live audition" of Zach Wheeler at Target Field is off now that he has been placed on the IL with "shoulder fatigue" according to MLB.com.

That means the Twins are not expected to see Wheeler, deGrom or Syndergaard during their two game set this week.

yep... that just tanked his value unless he comes back in 10 days and doesn't miss a beat.

Are they even allowed to trade a guy on the IL?

Yes, you can trade players that are on the IL. At least I'm 90% sure.......but I'd think this hurts his value.

Shoulder fatigue, huh?

So I guess we can add Wheeler, along with Ken Giles, as dicey propositions to trade for in the next couple weeks.

Things are drying up fast around the league...

With so few teams in the NL looking like they will sell, I don't think it's an overreaction to say things are drying up.

Methinks prospect prices are going to be pretty high the next two weeks. Hopefully Falvey & Levine are ready to pay up for one of the top-tier guys.

I thought you needed commish approval to trade an injured player. Though, it wasn’t called the IL from the time I’m recalling that nugget, so grain of salt there.

Not that it should be a problem. If MLB let the Wilpons keep the Mets after the Madoff situation and the corresponding low payroll shenanigans, this probably wouldn’t raise an eyebrow.

Wikipedia says that. And it might be true, but I would guess it's just a formality -- they probably just want to make sure both sides fully acknowledge the injury, and agree on any related contingencies, before approving the deal.

My preferred source, Cub Reporter, puts it more succinctly: "A player on an Injured List can be traded, even if the player is not eligible to be reinstated and/or healthy enough to play."

He might be a good insurance option on a player to be named later deal.

The return would be contingent on the number of starts (or equivalent given the possibility of an opener) Wheeler makes for the Twins.

If he makes 8 starts the Twins give up Kohl Stewart. I have some comfort here knowing that the only way he gets 8 starts is if he is effective. The Twins have too many AAA options if he doesn’t pitch well on return from injury.

If fewer than 8 starts they give up a player they were going to have to expose in rule 5 this winter. Perhaps someone like Adam Bray.

The trade gives the Twins some insurance for an injury to a starter after the deadline. It gives the Mets a return and a chance at a guy like Stewart that could be in the back end of their rotation.

This trade would not alter any other trade plans. It simply uses the depth that they will have to manage as they set their 40 man roster this winter to buy some insurance.

I’d hope we are setting our sights higher than Wheeler if we’re going to bring in a starter.

Why is that? When healthy, he's the best rental option out there. He has the best stuff. The cat from Toronto or any of them are soft tossing gopher ball pitchers.

Give me guys with elite stuff. This team doesn't need and shouldn't go after guys that don't throw hard or have hammer breaking stuff.
