Adalberto Mejia DFAd

To make room on the active roster for Jake Odorizzi, the Twins have DFAd LHP Adalberto Mejia.

It will be interesting to see if he clears waivers and is outrighted, though they may also try to trade him.

I'm still one who believes in his stuff. We've seen it in short stints and I do think that the bullpen is a place he can succeed. I also think that this was the right decision for the Twins.

Yep. He’s worth a flyer because, at minimum, there’s a decent chance he becomes a lefty specialist out of the pen.

FWIW, his numbers as a starter are better than league average. 4.14 ERA, 1.9 bWAR in 25 starts. His IP/GS is only 4.7 but even that is less than one inning below league average. But I suspect a lot of that has been due to the fluidity of his role.

Point being, if I were running the theoretical non-contender that takes a flyer, I would work on stretching him out and try to let him start 8-10 games in August and September.

Oh, same here. Maybe I wasn’t clear but I think he’d be worth a look because even if he fails as a starter, there’s a decent chance he’ll work out in the bullpen.

He still has age on his side. Plus he throws lefthanded. He could be a starter if he stays healthy. Be interesting to see if he passes thru waivers (would have to be added to a 40-man). Otherwise, still ncie to keep in the system.

The Twins now have two 40-man spots open. But if they do add someone in a trade, it will mean a body or two going to the minors...or released from the pen. Something they can now do.

I hope they can get a team willing to make a trade for him I think they’ve seen all they’ve needed to see in ole Mejía time to move on.

Is that something that can happen? I am under the impression that if he's claimed he's gone and we get only the waiver fee in return.

I think this is an effort to create some trade market for him for an A ball type flyer and to create 40 man room for trades and Rule 5 guys. I'll bet he's traded within 3 or 4 days for someone we've never heard of.

Question: if a team picks him up, do they have to keep on their 40 and 25 man rosters, the latter since he's out of options? I think so but I'm a little unclear.

Unless they can get him through waivers, yes he would need to be on the 40 and 25 man rosters.

I suppose they could have optioned Littell or Duffey but those two are performing better and it was only a matter of time before they needed Mejia’s spot. I expect they will add two pitchers this month and Morin will face a similar fate with an option being used on the one of the pair above.

Which is what I expect to happen.

Which is unfortunate for us. I cant recall the details, but I believe he already had an option used when we acquired him.

This one could come back to sting a bit. But there also comes a time when injury and the such limited a guy and roster crunch just forces you to make a move like this.

Understand, I still like his potential. But not even including trade targets, I'm not so sure Smeltzer and Thorpe haven't already surpassed him.

Concur. He’s got potential, so a team who is somewhere around 5th-10th in the waiver claim list may well be willing to give up a lottery pick for him. Let’s get a Smeltzer-type, or a Littell.

No. But it is unfortunate. This guy has a live arm. Were I a rebuilding team who could afford to work with him and just let him pitch, I'd snap him up in a second.

If I were the Orioles I would grab him and put him in Cashner's spot.  In fact we should have traded him for Cashner, but I hear the interview on the radio where we were told the All Star break is a good time for the front office to take time off.  Well no one told Boston.

Yes, although the next team can try to get him through waivers. Blue Jays and (I think) the Reds played some back and forth games with the Twins not too many seasons ago.

They still have 10 days to trade him.

Welllll... I think they have 7 days in total to trade him, otherwise there is no time to ask waivers and wait the necessary 3 days in order to assign him outright. That's assuming they haven't already put him on waivers.

While I doubt it will happen, I hope Mejía goes unclaimed. I think he could be an effective starter. He's never really established himself despite pretty good stuff. The most likely scenario is that he just gets traded for a low-level prospect.

Mejia has got the stuff of a decent mid-rotation starter. He just hasn't been able to stay healthy long enough to develop consistent command. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to see him catch on someplace else, then wind up being a good mlb starter.
