Jim Bowden (The Athletic) Trade Proposal for Twins

Well, if I go by how contracts are defined and who is on the current roster, really they don't have one starting pitcher that is "signed" for 2019.

Perez is a team option. That contract isn't "signed" until the Twins pick it up.

Berrios is under team control, but really him and all these players are only "signed" for one year. I know Berrios isn't going anywhere so he's the one guy I included as signed for this.

We certainly can assume some things, but at this point they're still going to have to fill 4 starting rotation spots next year. Whether that's by resigning Gibson/Odorizzi/Pineda or picking up the option on Perez, they're still going to have holes to fill and you're asking for trouble if it's with the guys in the minor leagues out of the gates.

Perez's history of reliable starting doesn't look all that different from Gibson's or Odorizzi's (pre-2019). I think having a reasonable option on his services for 2020 is worth noting, in addition to Berrios's team control.

I understand the desire to add another SP for 2020 -- but how much are you willing to risk getting shut out of any 2019 SP additions to do that? There's a real chance if you wait out Stroman and Boyd, you might be left with nothing -- which doesn't help 2020 either.

If there's real momentum to get framework of a trade done with San Francisco I hope Falvine pursues it.

We as fans can paralyze ourselves investigating options and waiting for the mythical "perfect piece". I hope our FO doesn't do that, knows what they want, and go for it.

Doesn't that limit your 2019 options even more?

How long as you willing to wait on Boyd? (Or wild card Syndergaard?)

I don't necessarily think so.

I'm not saying I would be upset if Stroman is who they get, he'll help get them comfortably into the playoffs and be a good piece next year. But I don't like matching him up against Verlander, Snell, or Sale in a best of 5/7.

Give me Bumgarner for that if we're trading. Or give me Odo and Berrios over him for that, and then I'm not sure you've shot high enough in your target for this year, and the cost will be felt.

How about Cave/Raley and Gordon?

Would you have taken that trade for Gibson? I wouldn't

The way I look at it, Gibson is basically a free agent at the end of the year, what would your trade for him from our minor league system. Would you take Graterol and Gordon? that wouldn't be enough for me I want another at least another guy that had a big arm but maybe not the control yet.

Also for those saying the Twins window is anything more than this year are making a huge assumption that everything will go right again next year, Twins pitching, Twins hitting, twins health,  including Cleveland's pitching getting hurt, and the White Sox looking at 2021 instead of 2020, and the Royals not getting any better, huge assumptions.

The Twins kicked in the door this year, lets worry about next years door this off season.

(With that being said I would rather trade for a starter they can control longer and not worried about that with a relief pitcher, with that being said with a rental pitcher you could ride them like the Brewers did with CC)

What about Mike Leake from Seattle, salary dump and controllable past this year. Trade them Gordon!

Leake isn't an improvement on anyone in the Twins rotation.  Super soft tosser who has been fairly lucky this season.

Welcome to TD!

That might be what we can expect for Gordon. How do you think Leake will match up in the playoffs against the Yankees or Astros?

Yes, and without thinking about it twice. Gordon's stock has fallen but he's still a solid prospect. Graterol is a fringe top 50 prospect.

I'm not sure who you count as "under contract" but we have team control on 2 of our current rotation, Berrios and Perez, and of course our current "6th starter" Smeltzer and any other minor leaguers.

Also, judging by recent effects of the qualifying offer, I think it's safe to assume we will re-sign one of Gibson or Odorizzi for 2020 and possibly beyond (and possibly both?). (Pineda could probably be retained for something like his 2019 cost too, although it's up for debate whether we should want to.)

IMHP Perez is a guy you do not want starting in the playoffs. He's good depth, but I personally wouldn't count him as much of an asset. I guess he is under contract though.
