Article: 10 Relievers Minnesota Could Target

Recommended Posts

Personally, I don't care about his personality. I see his peripherals and scream hard pass. If they want a starter, get an ace. Stroman isn't that. I'd target Matthew Boyd, Scherzer, one of the Mets starters, or even MadBum on a half year deal

Which peripherals?

He is a groundball pitcher that seems to do well limiting hard contact and homeruns.  Yeah, the Ks aren't out of this world, but he's not Bob Tewksbury.  What don't you like?

Dang.   I was hoping he was one of those GMs that negotiate by saing "Yeah, he doesn't fit in our plans for the future so we will give him up for a song."    Bumgarner is a free agent at the end of the year and the Giants are in last place.    They will move him They also have a lot of really bad performing infielders and outfielders.

They are very likely to move him but it sounds like its going to take a big overpay to get him. It is telling that even the Yankees with a clear need for starting pitching "might not be enamored enough with him to pay the necessary price" according to MLB.com. The Giants are saying that they aren't going to settle for an offer they don't like.

They don't absolutely have to move him either. Easy Qualifying Offer candidate, could re-sign him too since he is "their guy". San Fran has needed a large scale rebuild for a few years now and they have been dead set on buying their way out of it, re-signing him isn't that far-fetched. Maybe the new GM will operate differently or maybe its the owners that keep saying fix the team we have.

I'm all for trading prospects. I just hope that our FO is a shrewd as Houston's and can get what they need by trading the mid-levels, like they took for Pressly.

It would have been optimal to just sign a great reliever for cash, but that ship has sailed... er.... sunk.

Plus, I would love to have Bumgarner for a playoff run. Talk about a playoff resume. Or, do you think Houston would trade the aging and washed up Verlander?  :P

Why are people so turned off by Stroman? He’s young with a track record of above average to excellent performance—exactly the kind of player the Twins should be targeting for their rotation. I’m genuinely curious why some people don’t want him.

I like Stroman too, a little bit of an injury history but I'm on board.

Toronto is in an interesting position though with that extra year of control.  They have hardly any financial commitments and the clock is started on Vlad Jr.  Would they already be looking at 2020 to make some noise with Vlad Jr and possibly Bo Bichette? 2021 is probably more realistic but they might have something to think about.

I tried to do some digging on this but it looks like Stroman is a passionate, animated pitcher and for some they look at that as disrespectful or cancerous. I couldn't find anything seriously alarming in his profile though.

I hope we don't dismiss the idea of a talented kid like him based on notions like that. We have players on our team now like Berrios and Rosario that play with that kind of passion. I think good teams have players with an edge like that.

Hm. Sounds like he’s maybe the sort (some) people dislike until he’s on their team.

I would look for one of two types.

They need to add someone at the top of the bullpen. There are several on the list up there that would qualify.

I would avoid Diekman, Romo and Watson. Older guys used in set up roles, I think I would avoid Givens and Holland also. I would certainly want to dig deep on their command.

The other type is the Pressly type. Someone with control that appears to be emerging. Amir Garrett or Robert Stephenson from the Reds might be candidates. They are top 10 in pitch/100 for sliders. Carlos Estevez and Brandon Brennan in that list also. There are a few similar pitchers in the curve ball list. How good is Barlow’s curve ball? It has top 10 pitch value but he doesn’t use it as much as his slider. Scouting is key here.

i’d look for one of each. They need two good to very good setup and closer type relievers.

Because it’s Twins type move. I think people want a proven Ace like Mad Bum or Scherzer, both have better WHIP & K rate. Mad Bum is only a year older than Stroman. They are the sexy move that the Twins never make. It’s like hoping to win the Powerball in this sports town with this franchise but we can still hope.

The problem with this is that Scherzer probably won’t be available, and Stroman is an equal or better pitcher than Bumgarner by quite a few metrics. Not that they shouldn’t check in on Scherzer or go for Bumgarner. But Stroman should also be an option.

Neither his K rate nor his BB rates are anything to write home about. I guess I can live with the grounders as he should get a lot of double plays, but I'd prefer a pitcher that can miss bats a bit more.

The Giants "trade chips" aren't actually very good ones because MadBum and Smith are half-year rentals. The market prices, as long as the team is really willing to deal them (sounds like may not be the case with Bumgarner) for these types of guys are not really high (see Familia and other deals from last year).

That's fair, although I wasn't really saying that Smith would cost great prospects -- just that the Giants probably wouldn't target a guy like Cave in return for him.

I'll note that Smith's salary is lower than Familia's, and he's also left-handed, which could help his market. Also MLBTR even noted that the prospect haul for Familia seemed light, and the Mets were between GMs at the time, so maybe it's not the best benchmark:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/07/athletics-to-acquire-jeurys-familia.html

Despite the interesting upside for Wahl, the general consensus in the industry is that the prospect return in this trade isn’t particularly impressive, especially considering the trade value of Familia.

But yeah, pure rentals ultimately shouldn't cost too much. It might come down to something like what you propose (Yunior Severino) but I wouldn't expect the Giants to jump on that deal too early, and there's no guarantee that offer would win out either (other teams could offer similar prospects to Severino, and then it would be almost a coin flip to see which prospect the Giants preferred).

Yeah, Severino is a name I mention for being in the potential range of prospect ranking or whatever you want to call it I think it would cost. Usually in trades like this the team puts out a list of guys they might want. Then as the team acquiring the MLB-er you say no or take some guys off and give them their pick between a few of them. Definitely always comes down to the guy the team would prefer when multiple suitors.
