If the results were 100% reliant on Rule 4 results, I might agree. My theory is that increasingly, successful teams will be relying on IFA acquisitions and adroit, opportunistic active management of player assets, especially trade market decisions. Right now, about 40% of our roster regards English as a second language.

I just read somewhere that BA had moved both Balazovic and Larnach into its Top 100. A big if right now, but if Lewis, Kirilloff, and Graterol regain their status, the system isn't overrated if one accepts FanGraph's current #7 ranking, for example.

I agree. I was simply responding to a poster saying the 2017 class doesn't look good.

I'm not sure that's true. Balazovic and Arraez have probably already moved Enlow out of the top 10. And maybe more than one pick from this year could figure into our top 10. I wouldn't be surprised if Lewis and Rooker are the only 2017 picks on our top 10 in a month or so. But Lewis is a heck of a get and he makes our farm system pretty strong.

I think the criticism I have with our system right now is that it's deep but not really tall, if that makes sense. We have a ton of players who could become solid MLers, which is great. We don't have that many who could become better than solid. And this recent draft seemed to add a bunch of future solid players but lacks that upside.

Even 2 in the top ten is strong, especially when one of them is top 10 overall.

I guess I'd have to ask how many of these players that Houston is bringing up were acquired since October 2016.
Falvine's first draft picks haven't even been in the system 2 years yet, but I think we have a lot of good prospects that are right around the corner (hopefully).

My comment was about the system, not the FO currently in place.

agreed that the resources and process seems better. Hard to say if that is generating better results yet, but I think it will. We'll see if it generates great results.....that's what really matters.

The bullpen issue notwithstanding, I think the 2019 results have been pretty great. It's reasonable to attribute a lot of that to the talent evaluators, who do a lot of work behind the scenes and weigh in on every player and prospect decision that's ultimately made, amateur and professional, foreign and domestic. Falvey didn't just grab some spreadsheets and make a call on all these moves that have powered the club here in 2019 and fortified the pipeline.

Obviously, we can't expect to have seen MLB results yet from efforts of the past three years from the Rule 4 and IFA efforts. However, I think we have plenty of hints that should make us feel good, and that includes the most visible ones in Lewis (despite his struggles) and Larnach. And don't sleep on Enlow, he's heating up, boys!

But then, they should probably cut bait with that pathetic IFA prospect, Misael Urbina. He's shaping up to be another disappointment like Lewin Diaz and Wander Javier.  ;)  This morning, the putz got caught stealing home, which rendered mute his 3-4 1HR 2SB day at the plate.

After reading this had to go take a look at the box score.  That was Urbina's best game, wasn't it? Should be fun watching him develop the next couple years.

The player taken immediately after Jay, Andrew Benintendi, wasn't the worst alternative either (I know hindsight is always 20/20)

These are the dumbest posts out there. It's always easy to say we should have taken "this guy" years later. There were also many late round players most likely that have made the majors already as well.

I think they are just slowly dumping anyone that they didn't draft or trade for that are not excelling. Not a bad thing. You would have thought he could have been a throw in player in a trade for something we need.

Throwing in Tyler Jay would have zero impact in a trade for a good player.

I'm not sure ownership has ever made a commitment to use money like that. They are willing to spend less when rebuilding but have never shown any commitment to pushing payroll or using 'saved' money in that manner.

Remember when that Phil Hughes $$ and Mauer's contract ending would allow this team to spend their way out of the bottom half of the league in terms of payroll? Me too.....

Not that I had high hopes for Jay but if all they could muster was cash, I'd rather MN hold onto him even if the chance of him becoming useful is close to zero.

I tried looking on B-Ref for Cash Considerations... Came up empty. Maybe I'm spelling his last name wrong?

Hoping he has HUGE upside...

Oh, I remember Stormin' Norman. He broke my tiny grade school heart a few times, along with teammates like Al Kaline, Bill Freeman, Dick McAuliffe, and Rocky Colavito. My first baseball rivalry!

The thing about they system I wonder.....Houston just keeps pulling up good to great players. MN has pulled up Garver and, um, who in the last two+ years for their debut? And who is likely to come up this year? I might be missing someone, but there doesn't seem to be much actual help coming up right now (or recently).

Houston's had a few more years of their developmental system being in place.  My frustration with the previous FO was a lack of a developmental system, by today's standards.  If 2 years from now some of the players in a+ and below aren't translating to the show then I won't be as optimistic as I am now.  (not commenting on aa and above because the lower levels are the ones that will give more accurate value to this developmental approach)

I'm confused by this.  How does money coming off the books equate to being able to spend even more money than was already being spent?  Re-allocating resources doesn't equate to growth.  (We'll see if the added revenue by winning is an incentive to spend more)

Jay just needs a new environment. Everything about him looked uncomfortable to the point he was the last one in the the dugout before game time and first one out of the stadium after the game. His last pitching performance in Pensacola that I watched was stomach turning and I felt bad for him.

Interesting what the cash was. They did give him a nice bonus. International money perhaps?

No, international money is generally specified as such.

My guess in these situations is that the cash is fairly nominal, akin to a waiver fee. But I admit I don't know exactly. (Can someone turn on the "Jack Goin" Bat-Signal?)

Well in theory as revenue rises every year, one would expect payroll to increase, especially with significant money coming off the books and draft picks being sold for cash. The mantra for a long time has been "they're saving $$ to use for when the team starts to win." Setting aside the flawed logic, there's nothing to suggest that any "saved $," is actually bankrolled and put towards payroll in another season, regardless of team expectations or performance. Payroll directly reflects that. My post was sarcastic and alludes to the unsupported idea that money saved or not spend within one season is used as a surplus in another.

I guess you'll have to define reallocation. If they actually took money saved and put it towards better players the following year I'd argue that it would indeed equate to growth.

Norm or Dave would be a nice get for Jay.

Otherwise, oof, they should just give the Twins monetary considerations.
