Article: Minnesota Twins 2019 MLB Draft Signing Tracker

Recommended Posts

I guess because last year Larnach took a 500 to 600K discount to sign.  Granted he was picked higher but still that is quite a discount.  Most Draft experts had Wallner going around pick 60 and we took him at 39.  The difference is about 800K  You would like to think a savvy negotiater would be able to meet in the middle at say 400K.

Granted I don't have much inside info.  Maybe there were teams that were going to or would have taken him higher than 60 so the negotiating point is different.  He just seemed, given the low score on his bat as someone who would\should give a discount given where he was projected to go.

Larnach went from something like $3.6M to $3.1M... And from some reports, had the Twins not taken him, he could have fallen a little bit, so they made the deal. Wallner went right where he was projected to get and they still got him to take a discount.. I mean, Lewis took a discount of about $1.2M, but then again, he was 1.1.

Yeah I am wondering what number they need to get Holland.  It must be fairly high as teams let him go by after the 2nd round so he must have expected at least 2nd round money.  Lot's of miss in that swing right now and it takes a good one to make it to MLB.  Hoping 500 to 600K gets it done.  Not sure if they can lure Julien away or not.  They probably need at least 500K maybe more because he doesn't have much to lose going back and trying to get better.  With a little improvement he should be able to make it in 2nd or third round.  If he really improves he could go in the first round.  If he stays the same then he likely falls a long ways again.  I don't think the Twins will get him but I hope they do.

Holland will sign, no doubt. They wouldn't take him in the 5th round if they were at all concerned about him not signing. Julien, as a draft-eligible sophomore could be more of a challenge... but I doubt it would take more than $400K, and I think they have enough money. They just won't be able to sign any of the high school picks that they took late... most likely.

To date, the only HS draftee the Twins have signed is their first round pick.

Of course, the next HS pick was the 17th round and they only drafted 8 overall.  IT still is an interesting phenomena.  I guess when on a typical given night 30-40% of the lineup is players from latin America the sourcing of young prospects has changed.

The most cost effective signings for team control are college players. 3 years older, less risky as far as flaming out completely and closer to contributing as a big leaguer. You don't have to burn option years on players in single-A when you draft them out of college.

I like this strategy of getting college pitchers in bulk. If nothing else it should provide a steady supply of relief pitching.

Julien is returning to Auburn officially, as of this morning.

Yeah  I think that makes sense.  If he can lose some of that swing and miss and gain some average and OBP then he can go much higher next year.  He has the power tool just needs to convince scouts he has a better hit tool\eye at the plate.  Good for him but no high risk steal for the Twins.

Signing Gross for $10k is a surprise, pleasant surprise.  They have to get Holland signed, but still should have a good balance remaining to go after one or two kids taken after the first ten rounds.  Maybe #11, Brubaker?

All indications are this is going to end up being another excellent draft.  Remains to be seen what they do on the field the next two or three years, but seems like management had a good grasp of this draft.

11th round pick brubaker has already signed according to the list up above. And some other comments. Maybe use some of the leftover money for that Texas high school pitcher or the Puerto Rican outfielder or maybe their 40th rounder

Good catch, yes those three are good possibilities. Sounds like the Stillwater duo is set on going to Oregon State.

Still holding out hope for Antoine Harris, as he was the most highly ranked HS player the Twins drafted that isn't signed, but that may be a pipe dream.

I was also wondering about the Canadian HS pitcher Antoine Jean or were they able to sign him already?

Looks like all 11 of the first ten rounds are signed with +$443,000.  Overall, looks like they signed 31 of 41.

Can they use the entire $443,000 and give $568,000 to the Auburn second baseman?  Would be almost exactly what they paid Holland.  I know he said he was returning, but dollars can change everything.

Hopefully they will get one or two more signed, making an unusually big class really big.  But then we don't know, maybe this new regime will always sign 30+ every year.

18th round pick Edouard Julien from Auburn has signed for 493k

Wow I did not see that coming.  That is a nice get for the Twins.  Yet another power hitter with a bit of swing and miss concerns but he is young.  Plenty of time to turn it around.  Very happy they got him he has fair bit of upside Fangraphs had him at 88 and MLB at 177.  Doesn't run real well, doesn't have a great arm but has an above average power stroke.  Currently a lot of swing and miss but he has been hitting really well recently.  He is a nice lottery ticket if you ask me and they needed to do something with that left over money anyway.

Do they have enough powder left over to sign the Canadian lefty?  Someone else?

[Disregard this comment, thought the amount listed above as remaining was after signing Julien.  After looking again, they used every dollar remaining to get him signed.  Nice going front office!]

Another year where they signed over 30 picks.  Much different than the past when the norm was mid-20's signed each year.

guess they didn't really like many prep players this year... not sure what to think about that.

Yeah I was thinking they would spend that money on one the High School pitchers they took late.  Either they didn't like them that much or $500,000 wasn't enough to get them to sign?

System needs more pitching lotto tickets if you ask me but experts said this year was not great for arms so looks like they are taking their shots with hitters that have potential instead of arms as they went over slot for two power hitters with swing and miss in Holland and now Julien. No such deals for any arms this year.

The two Stillwater kids taken in the 35 and 36 rounds have played together and been friends since they were very young.  They are both headed to Oregon State and signing them was a long shot from the moment they were drafted.

Was thinking the Canadian but any high school pitcher would have been nice.
