No respect? Just the way we like it.

Couple ESPN stories today, including Eduardo Perez and Tim Kurkjian both giving the Twins lots of props and ranking them definitively #1 in their personal rankings: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/page/powerrankings052719/power-rankings-twins-rise-al-elite-reach-no-1

Kurkijan almost gushed. Recent history ESPN would gloss-over the worst team in baseball over the last decade. Why wouldn’t they?

Everyone loves a feel good story.

Twins havent won a playoff series in how many years? Yah, until they do they will not get any respect.

I mostly agree that teams have to prove it but when is the last time the Yankees won a World Series? Or even appeared in a World Series?

They haven't really been dominant for the past decade plus.

The big difference as I see it is that Houston has proved it. They've been pretty good for a few years now. We've been good for 2 months. I'm perfectly fine with them sitting in the top spot until we do something to unseat them.

I don't understand why anyone cares. Why do people care if "the media" are covering their favorite team or not? Genuine question, why do you care?

I am not sure if it's a recognized psychiatric condition, but MN sports fans need their teams to be acknowledged by the rest of the US. (Read: Both coasts). When, if and by the time that rare feat happens, it's generally followed by a very loud collapse! We then yell "Phil Cuzzi" or "he pushed off", while the rest of the country shrugs and says "oh well". I used to be frustrated by this issue also. But once one realizes that the only true stat ESPN analyzes is market share and advertising revenue it's easier to understand. :)

The State of Minnesota as a whole seems to have the self esteem of a 14 year old middle-schooler.  I never could understand the constant need for praise from the national media. Do they like us? Do they really like us?  Did we do a good Super Bowl? Did you know that Bob Dylan and Prince are from here?  Gets to the point of looking desperate and pathetic.

True, but no one said the World Series or dominance is necessarily the bar for "respect" here.

The Yankees have won the last two AL Wild Card games. The 2017 Yankees beat the defending AL champs Cleveland in the division series, and almost beat the eventual world champ Astros in a 7-game ALCS.

The 2018 Yankees lost in the ALDS, but even that was to the 108 win juggernaut and eventual world champ Red Sox.

If the Twins and Yankees have roughly similar records in the 2019 regular season so far, and someone wants to "power rank" the Yankees ahead of the Twins, I don't really see a problem with that.

As of 5/27 the Twins are 6-8 against teams with a winning record. They don't deserve respect yet.

You realize that record changes by the day when a team falls below .500?

The Twins are 9-9 against teams with a winning record the day they played them.

We are beating the teams we are suppose to be beating and playing competitive baseball against other "good" teams. That is all you can ask for, I can't remember the stat exactly or where I read it. But, Boston played below .500 ball last year against teams with a  winning record or "good" teams.

B-Ref says Boston was 41-33 vs. .500 or better teams in 2018, 3rd best mark in MLB:

I think the main difference in this example is that the there is a vast chasm between the Yankees not being dominant and the Twins being largely irrelevant. In that time the Yankees have lost 4 ALCS's whereas the Twins have 3 playoff appearances with zero wins to show for it.

I agree that they get a lot more attention than they should, but I think it silly to think that the two teams are even in the same conversation success-wise. The Yankees have a prolonged string of success whereas the Twins have a prolonged string of the exact opposite.

When the Twins start beating the good teams on a regular basis then I'll get excited and give them the RESPECT they deserve. Until then they are only better than the crappy teams that they were a part of just last season.

You also realize they have 34 of their remaining 100 ish games left against teams with winning records? It could be up to 50 if Cleveland turns it around. You're gonna wait a while... Might as well hop on and enjoy the ride beating up bad teams.

One site says 2... another says 4. It is different opinion or methodology and has no sway on if we make the playoffs or not.

With my methodology. I will not include records from previous years because this a whole new year with new players. Even the old players are new with a fresh metrics.

Record... Run Differential... Home Runs... Team ERA are just a few of the things that tell me the Twins should be near the top.

If someone says they are not. OK with me.

What's your definition of a "good team"? You realize that there's only 13 teams in all of baseball, not including the Twins, who currently have a winning record?
