What are they going to do with Cron? An .841 ops and on pace for 48 dingers? Looks like he's ARB 3 next year so we have basically an option on him an Perez. Damn these moves look good! His fastball is straight but has a ton of velo... I believe he hit 98 multiple times

I remember an article about them in the STrib - maybe 5-6 years ago when they were both playing A ball. They used to hang out and go fishing together down in Florida during the season to kill time and hang out before games and on off days. They've been tight for a while.

He didn't reach free agency though. The Twins claimed him off waivers. Had he gone unclaimed instead, he'd then have become a free agent, and would no longer be arbitration eligible.

Duffey was really good.

He came in with two runners on base and got an easy foul ball pop up that Sano dropped. Instead of folding he fought back to strike out the batter leaving the two inherited runners stranded.

In his second inning a great pitch busts the bat of the lead off hitter and the balls falls weakly just over Cron’s glove for a hit. The second guy hits an easy come backer and he throws to second for a possible DP. Arraez drops the throw. He doesn’t fold and strikes out two of the next three with the third out being an easy come backer to the mound.

Two nit-picks here. Cron wasn't on the field except to hit (DH last night) and Duffey was fine, but threw a lot of pitches. I didn't think he was dominant, but he did get the job done.

It was Gonzalez at 1B. My mistake.

 

As for pitches that is all on the defense. Sano catches the pop up and Arraez catches the ball at second and it is many fewer pitches. He lost two (or three outs if they get the DP) due to bad defense on routine plays. It would take a good play from the 1B but that is another out he might of got on that broken bat. The alternative was needing to strike guys out and face extra batters at the cost of more pitches.

If he stays healthy and performs like he has this year. You go to arbitration with him and pay it. Too many other holes to fill. It would be an incredibly risky move to let Cron go and just hand it all to Kiriloff or Rooker. The roster will be deeper and better with Cron and (Kiriloff or Rooker) on it, if they earn the way North. 

 

The Twins will have to (potentially) fill:

 

Three Rotation Spots (Odorizzi, Pineda, Gibson). Not to mention we don't know the health or performance out of Berrios or Perez come winter.

That's why it's critical that Arraez plays when he is up. That's why it's critical that Garver and Astudillo get plenty of looks behind the plate. That's why it is going to be critical to see what Kohl can do... Maybe get a look at Graterol, Thorpe and Gonsalves. If the rotation is full... get them multiple inning work out of the pen. 

 

The Twins need to know where they need to allocate dollars because we all know the dollars will never be endless. 

 

Lots of talk about Kimbrel... I'd love to see him on the roster but if you had to prioritize between Kimbrel and Kuechel. When you look at next year and the fragile health of most starting pitchers... Kuechel might be the priority. 

 

Yes we need to prioritize this year... but I think you can prioritize this year and next year at the same time.

Do you recall the year when Sano was recovering from TJ surgery and Buxton was off all year with an injury I don't recall.  Read once that much of the summer was spent by the two going to the complex to work out in the morning, then fishing together in the afternoon.  Yes, I suspect they do feel like brothers.

According to the box score Berrios was lifted after giving up two runs but with at least two runners on base. Duffey let two inherited runners score. I listened for a while and indeed it was a tough slog for Berrios, but I think we do need to keep a sharp eye on those inherited runners scored. Earned runs is hiding deep flaws in this bullpen. Falvey needs to get reinforcements fast.

 

Berrios had been on the bench for a LONG time with those back-to-back 5-run innings by the offense. I figured he would not be able to last 5 innings with the way the Twins were hitting.

You can't even think about moving on from Cron at this point. Better defense than that provided by his predecessor- which wasn't even advertised when he was signed.

 

In one-fourth of the season done, he has the same WAR as his predecessor achieved in a full season.
