Meanwhile in Rochester-Relievers

Today I want to look at the relievers using the same rating system as I did for the starters. (If or when I do the hitters, I will be using different categories...)

 

Here are the 4 categories I used for the pitchers:

1) Needs a real shot

2) Needs time to develop

3) Had their shot

4) What the heck is going on this year?

 

4's I created this category mostly because of these relievers...

 

DJ Baxendale, with the door wide open to push his way to the majors, Baxendale is off to a rough start. He's allowed 13 runs, 10 earned in 12 innings of work over 7 appearances. He does have 15 K's vs 6 Walks but his BA against is .288. Last year it was .299 but he was able to limit the damage and hold off the runs. Either he turns things back around to his career numbers or he might be getting close to "stick a fork in him" level of struggles.

 

Ryan Eades 8.47 ERA looks even worse. He has struck out 23 in 17 innings while only walking 7 but the BA against of .292 is a career wrecking ball. Last year Eades had a 3.54 ERA, .224 AAA BA against, .266 combined, in 76.1 innings. In 2017 the combined BA against was .209. 

 

It gets worse. Gabriel Moya is coming off injury and has only tossed 7.1 innings but the BA against is .333 to go with his 7.36 ERA (9.53 if you're only looking at Rochester in 5 innings) Like both gentlemen above, he is striking out more than one per inning with 11 K's and 5 BB's, but the hits...

 

Then there is Jake Reed. I've been clamoring to give this guy a shot and I really want to call him a 1 because in previous years he has earned that shot but 12 earned runs in 16 innings doesn't look good. The BA against is only at .258 and he too is striking out more than one an inning at 18 K's to go with 10 walks.

Austin Adams is 32 years old and spent parts of 2014, 15 and 16 in the Majors without much success. He has 28 K's to 6 walks in 18 innings this year which makes his 4.50 ERA look a little better but I would prefer prospects get the chances over guys that have had a shot already in Cleveland.

 

Preston Guilmet is only 31. He spent parts of 2013, 14, 15, and 18 in the majors. He only has 33 total innings but again, lets give the prospects a chance especially when dudes got a 7.16 ERA and 309 BA against. Yes 23 K's in 16 innings looks nice but there are other problems here...

 

Addison Reed also falls into this category for me. He's had a nice run but the run is up. He has only notched 3 innings in AAA so I won't even mention numbers (All of these have been SSS already but that would be ridiculous)

 

2's

Fernando Romero is 24 and has so much potential. I want him to be a starter but alas, he's in the bullpen. We have all seen the inconsistency. Lets give the kid some consistent time in the minors and get him ready. I would hope that he can be someone we call upon later in the season but for now, lets leave him in one place until he't ready. If were not going to keep him in the Majors because were contending, leave him down there until were ready to call him up for an extended go.

 

Andrew Vasquez was lights out until his call up last year. He has a career 1.74 ERA in 186 MiLB innings. His numbers were consistent at every level every year until last years call up. His career BA against of .201 is only a little lower than his MLB .238 but some really bad appearances at the MLB level has us all confused on who he could be. He's gotten a taste (I think the managers put him in tough unfair to a rookie spots) but Now the kid knows what he needs to do at the MLB level. He needs to put it back together in Rochester, get ready, then come up here and blow the doors off.

 

1's

Tyler Duffey was my only 1 and he got called back up before I typed this (but after I made my list). So he is up and that's a wrap on the Rochester pitchers

We know these pitchers.  We like some of these pitchers.  We just don't know when we like these pitchers.  I hope none of them have to get called up and Rochester has a terrific year. That way we don't have to go fishing for relievers on the open market.
