Article: Ryan and Gardenhire speak to season ticket holders

Jerry White?

Yeah, that was weird for a caller to single out White. That's almost as ridiculous as calling for Vavra to be let go.

The caller that called out White also said that Vavra was a great hitting coach. So I don't know what his problem was...

Casilla is a total waste of $1.5 million (the difference between the $2 million he would somehow be owed, and Brian Dozier). He is a goner, thankfully. I didn't mind a lot of this interview other than the damn Mauer remarks about batting second. Depth and balnace don't matter. The number 2 hitter gets more plate appearances. Good grief. Mauer is MADE for the 2 spot. And frankly, Willingham is made for the 3 spot (best way to score a run with 2 out and nobody on is obviously a homer). Gardenhire's reliance on "old school" mentality is just childish. Span, Mauer, Willingham, Morneau, Plouffe, Doumit, Dozier, Revere, Florimon is the best use of those nine players. Parmelee would replace the Doumit spot and Carroll the Florimon spot. OBP is a simple stat for you to know, Gardy. GET WITH IT.

Trying to figure out if this is encouraging:

There have been talks about moving him to third but all of those decisions haven't been run past Mauer. His arm action would need some work at third but it looks like the perfect move. It's always up to the player for approval before we do anything and he loves to catch.

We get that he likes to catch but given the Twins long-time problems at 3rd (and the iffiness of Plouffe and long-term iffiness of Sano at 3rd), wouldn't you think they'd at least be TALKING with Mauer about 3B if it looks like the PERFECT move?

What has been the most frustrating thing about this season?

Ron Gardenhire (RG): Some of the fundamentals haven't been there like getting bunts down and hitting the cutoff man. The Twins take pride in those things and it isn't showing up on the field. Coaches continue to work hard with the players in practice but the results haven't been showing up on the field.

I cannot believe that he did not say the starting pitching was the most frustrating thing this season. 99% of the people who are following the Twins agree. He either is lying to protect his buddy Andy, or he is deluded. Regardless, he has to go. If he things that the biggest problem with this team and what made them lose 90+ after they lost 99 is "doing the little things right", I just don't believe he has what it takes to ID a root cause of the problem and try to fix it. Apparently he is part of the problem too.

---The starting pitching is clearly the worst thing about this season and the number 1 reason for another 90+ losses. But from the mananger's perspective, I can see why Gardy is more frustrated with the poor fundamentals. His job is to have guys playing to the best of their ability. The rotation has been awful, but it's been filled mostly with guys who would be lucky to grab the 5th-starter role on most other teams. I don't know that they're capable of being all that much better.

But the stuff Gardy is talking about here should be better. The players on this team are capable of doing it much better. And the fact that they aren't is, to me, a bigger indictment of Gardy than the performance of the rotation or his answer to this question.

I still love the team, and I'll cheer for them, but I can't fathom why anyone would renew a season-ticket package for 2013. With no changes on the horizon (yes, I read the Mackey piece -- I'll believe it when I see it), the 2013 team will look and play exactly like the 2011 and 2012 teams. Only when the scholarship program finally ends for the coaching staff would an offer to spend serious money on the club sound enticing again. No one that's a part of the organization seems to get this, and the fact that Gardy is reduced to defending his "friends" on the coaching staff, rather than their behavior or their results, speaks volumes for the continued downward direction of this ballclub.

> I need to make better decision on how to spend the dollars. We can't have a lot of money tied up in players at Triple-A like Nishioka and Blackburn.

I generally like Terry Ryan but I found this disappointing. In one breath, he seems about to take the heat for the signing of Marquis. In the next breath, he's passing the buck to his predecessor. "I need to make better decision on how to spend the dollars... THAN BILL SMITH DID."
