Article: MIN 4, BAL 3: Gibby Good, Hildy Holds, Rogers Saves the Sweep

Recommended Posts

The Twins need to decide how much they like Adalberto Mejia. He didn’t pitch today. He didn’t pitch in either game yesterday. Meanwhile, Hildenberger and Rogers threw at least 18 pitches both days.

That’s how guys get overused. By not using guys that are there.

The Twins need to keep sending him out there until Falvine decides to take him off the roster. Not using him is simply not an option.

Not using him for a few days is always an option. I wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to trade him or he comes up with a mysterious ailment.

A few thoughts/opinions:

1] Next to the Twins actually winning all 3 games, the biggest highlight was listening to Blyleven and Kaat in the booth for the weekend. Not only reminiscing and telling old stories, but their Basball knowledge and opinions about today's game, especially the changes in how pitchers are used prepared and developed was priceless.

4] Can't we just admit Garver has improved behind the plate, may be one of the best offensive catchers around, and just admit he's the #1 guy back there at this point?

5] Can we also admit that the Cron signing was good? Yes, we can debate a power hitting 1B/DH type may be a dime a dozen. Guy is a decent hitter with power coming off his best season after a few adjustments and finally getting 500AB. He's starting to heat up now and is playing an excellent 1B. Without bringing in a certified All Star, could they really have done any better?

Oof, dunno if i can get with the Blyleven-Kaat pairing. waaay too much "In my day..." in regards to how coddled pitchers are today. Did not love. I did appreciate Dick making sure people knew who some of the players they were talking about; I know who Earl Battey was and when he caught for the Twins, but a lot of people watching would have missed on stuff like that.

Agree on Garver. He's hitting so well that you can forgive his lesser ability at blocking pitches. A strong bat is really an advantage at catcher, and he's good enough behind the plate that I'm not worried about anything else. he seems to set up well back there and the pitchers don't seem to struggle with the way he calls a game.

I was on board with Cron from the start, and while he was a bit slow-starting with the bat, he can definitely hit. His defense is better than advertised and he's really made a lot of very fine plays around the bag. I would think the left side of the infield is going to have a similar level of confidence gunning the ball over to 1B that they did when Mauer was there. He's doing a nice job and I'd take him over Austin 10 out of 10.

Yeah I'm on board. The Cron signing looks good. Cruz signing looks great. The Schoop signing looks good. The Gonzalez signing...still up in the air but I think he'll come around. After last year's bombs, it's nice to see this year's signings have been a complete 180 and are really contributing!

Twins Daily Brothers and Sisters:

Go check out ESPN.com MLB page and CBS Sports.com MLB page and

see if you can find ANY story on the Twins sweep of the Orioles or 11 home runs in Saturday's double header? Answer: Nope

If Yankees, Red Sox, Nationals, Phillies, Astros and/or the Dodgers, it would be a greater story than Babe Ruth and hot dogs at stadium concessions?

Minnesota will be perpetually dismissed until the Twins win 3 consecutive World Series and then teeth-gnashing grudgingly by National Media...

We're off the radar guys....lets do a NORAD surprise attack in 2019?

I've never understood why anyone cares if the national media talks about the Twins.

Because it matters for recruiting via free agency. It matters for retaining our own guys. If success in the twin Cities can't get you any sort of national recognition, it means it's much harder for those players to generate significant income through endorsements and build their own brand. Agents know it and so do the clubs in the bigger media markets.

Plus, people get sick of hearing about "Yankees win" or "Yankees lose" leading every sportscenter.

Money and years matter much, much, more. I don't agree with your statement at all that national exposure matters enough to any player that it is as important as money. Not even close.

As for the 2nd point, sure, whatever, but that has nothing to do with the Twins' coverage, it's almost every team.

Same feeling I get when someone says New York or Boston fans or media would never accept this or that.   What do I care about what obnoxious fans tolerate?    I assume Mets and Orioles fans don't tolerate failure either but it still happens.

Media attention doesn't matter much to me. The thought that it matters to prospective Free Agents is also a bit far-fetched as far as I'm concerned. I think it matters what club houses and agents think and are talking about a lot more than what leads ESPN or mlb.com.

As far as this year's additions, I think they are doing well as a group. Schoop hasn't been consequential and Gonzalez hasn't hit much, but I expect all will be OK offensively. This season will hinge on run prevention IMHO. Berrios looks ready to take a step forward, but no one else in the rotation has really stepped up. I'm disappointed with May and Meija in the bullpen, perhaps I was expecting too much.

I guess you can care what the national media says when they say it while also not caring if they say anything at all but on the face of it Mike, you gotta admit, that was a pretty good burn.

more tongue in cheek... I enjoy Mike's thread... read it religiously, and have similar views about national attention... only time I get annoyed is that the Twins are never on nationally... but then again, they've deserved that of late.
