Game Thread: Twins @ Baltimore 4:05 PM PT (6:05 PM CT) 4/19/2019

Blake

Recommended Posts

Today, the Twins are in Baltimore, playing a team that, in years past, has been an antidote to losing. Unfortunately, this years version of Baltimore has been playing pretty well, meaning the Twins may very well have their work cut out for them.

With that, let's see if my mind can come up with five things to think about: (tip o' the cap to RiverBrian)

1. Did anyone else laugh at the excitement of Chris Davis finally breaking out his hitless streak and the breathless reporting of the "return of Chris Davis?"

2. Eddie Rosario: The most engaging and enraging player I've watched in a long time.

3. Jose Berrios, curve ball: some assembly required.

4. Camden Yards: I believe it was the first of the new ballparks that was somewhat retro, in that it was built for baseball and not some weird multi-use monstrosity.

Pitching for the Twins:

Jose Berrios

Pitching for Baltimore:

Alex Cobb

5. Play ball!

I actually like ketchup on my hotdogs. And mustard, and chopped onions, and sweet relish. With a double chaser of antacids.

I would also like to disclaim the lack of a schedule for Game Threads. Much too entertaining to leave open to chance.

Well, with a name like "Dave the Dastardly:" it's to be expected you'd do something as nefarious as ketchup on hotdogs.

I remember back during the dot.com boom, it was tough to recruit enough young folks into the Air Force. As a Senior NCO, I was sent to a local county fair in Texas, to help man a recruiting booth. Well, right away, the first morning, two strapping young Texan boys stepped up to the booth, and we started talking. I asked the young man who appeared the younger of the two "What do you do?"

"Pilot" he said.

"Well that's just excellent!" I said, as I turned to the airman helping man the booth and told him to sign this Texan up ASAP.

I looked at the other, and asked him the same question. "And what do you do?"

"I chop it!" he beamed, as proud as a peacock.

"Chop what?" I asked.

"Wood!" he exclaimed.

"Well," I said to him, "We don't really need any wood choppers in the Air Force, but my sincere thanks for your interest."

"Well ya'll won't be needin' my brother then, neither," he drawled.

"And why is that?" I asked.

"He won't be a pilin' nothin till I gets done choppin' it!"

Thanks for the intro, Blake!

I was thinkin' o' puttin' something together based on dating advice for the Twins as they meet the Orioles for the first time, and see if they hit off. I am pretty sure Berrios will take the catcher's signs as for what he serves up, and not rely on pinterest...

But i am not sure such a game thread intro would end well.

So i shall avail my self of these lame discs you offer.

Um, did you step up to volunteer to run it, when this was discussed earlier this season? (That's not entirely rhetorical - I can't remember, and can't be arsed to research it.)

A Carnac bit by any other name... :)

I think you should do it, it would be hilarious.

I'd say that based on the adds on this site of late, that might not be a bad idea... You could probably add some cooking advice for Vanimal too.

Sorry, but I missed that discussion. Been out of touch. Was having computer problems. Spent a week trying to find someone who could fix it. Then when I finally decided to go with a new computer I lost my internet connection for a week  - storm related. Then after being offline for three weeks I discovered my old TD password went under with the old computer. Couldn't sign in. More time out of touch. Finally set up a new account under Dastardly II just a few days ago when I couldn't get access to my old account.

If you look up "Frustrated" in the dictionary my picture is right there. I'm the guy holding the squirt gun loaded with Jameson in his mouth.

Anyway, if that's all we need is a volunteer brief me on what I need to do and I'll give it a shot. Little play on words there.

You could probably add some cooking advice for Vanimal too.

I failed to run across Van's cooking disaster until too late to add a reply yesterday, but his situation reminds me of one of the first rules I learned when doing software demos in public: rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, and then never ever deviate from the script once you've settled on it. (This means putting a lot of work into the demo to make it not look unduly rehearsed.) The most dangerous words to say in response to a question from the audience: "gee, I don't know either, let's try it and find out." Cue the "Boom" animated GIF.

Cooking a meal for someone you intend to impress should follow similar guidelines. "Hey, this could be interesting, what could go wrong," is not an auspicious start.

Hopefully one of the earlier instigators happens by and responds. If not, I'll bring it up with the other mods.

I heard or read that this was the first of the cool new-era ballparks and whatever the White Sox's stadium is currently called was the last of the non-descript old-era utilitarian ballparks.

I was very happy for Chris Davis, and didn't laugh at all. I know, a too serious post, I'll try harder.

it was good for Chris Davis, but the drama surrounding CHRIS DAVIS getting a hit was disproportionate to what actually happened.

Davis' numbers are brutal, especially with the amount of money he's being paid.

So, who’s your 26th man?

Per MLB rules, the 26th man is only active for game 2.

I suppose it depends on who pitched for the Red Wings yesterday.

Edit: And that was Kohl Stewart who started, DJ Baxendale for 2 plus and Matt Magill on his rehab. Vasquez threw 20 pitches Wednesday...

What's interesting is that that contract was the same $ per year ($23M), just one year less than Mauer's deal. If plenty of Twins fans were grumbling about Mauer's contract, I can't imagine what those fans would say if they were stuck with Davis' contract....for three more seasons after this one.

I also love that Khris Davis for the A's has hit 40+ homers the last couple of years (and currently leads MLB with 10 already this year). What's in a name?

I always heard the best dating advice was to be honest so once I tried it with an old flame of mine.   It was by far the most honest relationship I ever had.    I didn't lie to her at all..... well, except for not telling her my real name and address so in case she got pregnant she couldn't track me down

It is! Once you learn how to fake that, you've got it made.

/ Can't click like, because the rest of it was, well, you know...
