Job Search App

Recommended Posts

I'm currently working on a database that I MIGHT turn into a job search app. As some of you may know, I was laid off some time ago, and I:

wrote a novel

took a vacations

started to look for a job, but found I wasn't ready to work for someone else again.

decided to launch a website to help laid off people

bought a house, got distracted from writing.....

And now, the site has been live so far this year, but isn't gaining much traction. I have not done any advertising at all, or networking, as I am still light on content for reasons (some in my control, like getting distracted, some not).

Anyway.....

I cam across a free to use database, and started playing around with it. Now I have the start of an app to help you organize your job search.....which is where you come in.

What would you want in an app that helped you organize your job search? Most of my friends keep track of things in a spreadsheet, but this would be, well, better.....

What I have so far:

the ability to track your skills, job experience, education and certifications, interviews, jobs you are interested in, people you have met (or want to meet), interview questions with sample answers (and a way to store your answer), and a few other things I haven't put in yet, but will.....

All of that can be tied together, so you can see what people you know at Amazon, what jobs you are interested in at Amazon, and what interviews you've had at Amazon.

If anyone wants to offer their thoughts, here or in PM or email works.......

btw, here is the site so far:

I will be changing the home page in the coming weeks, it isn't my favorite yet.....

We're sure giving you lots of constructive help, aren't we...

It's been so long since I've been in the job market that I've forgotten whether the post office will deliver my job application across the country if I don't tape on the extra penny for airmail. My first thought, though, is to wonder how you plan to differentiate your app from the ones that are already out there - the barest of web searches turned up reviews of six from companies with names that I at least recognize. I assume you've looked closely at several.

Great question!

All but one of those is a job board, trying to get you to use their site. My app allows you to track everything about your search, rather than drive you to a job board.

You meet someone at a networking event, you can take notes on that. Then when looking for a job, you can see if any of your connections are there, track of they helped you. It allows you to track who you've interviewed with, job by job, and how that went. You could keep track of all your skills, hopefully that you have on LinkedIn already. You can track your certifications and training. It's more of a process management tool, than a job board. I'm shocked LinkedIn doesn't have this in their site.

Would a job searcher want to use multiple ones of these job boards, and use your app as a front end to avoid repeating the same info into slightly varying formats required at the site?

If we could get that to work.... Yes.

Well, I seem to recall you talking "marketing speak" at times, so you probably have your Use Cases in mind, with the requisite Personas to motivate them, and I'm sorry to say that retirement-age people probably aren't your Target Market, so I got nothin' that you don't already have. :)

Good golly there are a lot of typos in that post, which, ugh.

If anyone was thinking about hiring me to do their website or copy writing (two things I'm going to start doing to make money), they won't be doing so after reading that!

If you need a proofreader/editor, I’m currently not working and available.
