Notre Dame

Man, this is depressing. I was in Paris two weeks ago and climbed all the way to the top. Took photos with the gargoyles and my kids loved it. There were so many works of art inside it - hundreds of years old. I saw a sculpture that was well over a thousand years old. I hope they managed to rescue some things from the fire.

I saw this in a tweet - hopefully it is true:

Translation: Good news: all the artworks have been saved. The treasure of the cathedral is intact, the crown of thorns, the holy sacraments.   A glimmer of light amid the darkness.

and this tweet -- in addition  the architecture and art - simply all of the history that has occurred there.

From the coronation of Henry VI in the middle of the Hundred Years War, to the coronation of Naoleon, to the liberation of Paris form the Nazis, to the funeral mass for Charles De Gaulle, it's mind boggling how much history has occurred at Notre Dame.

I would imagine that the crown especially was protected and CNN is reporting that people are on hand focusing on rescuing the treasures in the cathedral.

But there is just so much artwork fastened to the walls that I'm afraid we won't see again. I've been to Notre Dame three times and the giant artwork in each alcove is just beautiful. Many of the pieces are 400-500 years old. Not sure its realistic that they could save those big pieces.

Hopefully they are smart enough to start cutting them out of the frames.

I have only been there once and my memory is a little shaky of what I saw there and what I saw in other cathedrals, but not only attached to the walls, but how much was painted into the walls as a fresco that cannot be removed.  I also read the roof was 13,000 oak trees cut in the 12th century.

I had a friend whose house burnt down.  They said the firefighters were amazingly good at [pulling things out that they thought would have sentimental value. Hopefully more was saved  than we thought would have been possible.

Let me guess, Trump said, "I know all the best dames".

He asked why planes were not dumping water on the fire.  Must act quickly!

He actually offered advice on how to put it out......

Honestly, that would have been my second guess. But, there are plenty of threads here for politics, so I'll just leave it at that and offer my hopes that they can salvage as much of it as is possible.

Do we even build iconic structures anymore? Is anyone going to care in 900 years if US Bank Stadium burns down?

My new kitchen is pretty nice.....but I'm not sure much of anything we build now will even last 900 years, let alone be worth keeping around.

to be clear, I mean structures.....there will be art and books and other stuff, but buildings? Maybe a handful.

The huge church in the middle of Dresden was rebuilt. I saw it in a couple of various stages. Was amazing. All the skill and artsmanship that went into it.

Yup, but it's not quite the same, but yup.

Not as iconic as Notre Dame, for sure, but it was mostly a ruin at the time of that undertaking. It was a massive rebuild using the best artisans from all over.

We actually have a vacation to Europe already planned for this summer (plane tickets and hotels are already booked/purchased).  Paris was one of our stops and Notre Dame was likely to be on the itinerary and obviously that's not going to happen now.  Disappointed for us obviously, but devastated for people to whom it is much more than just a site to visit on vacation.
