2020 Presidential Election

I know Rachel Maddow isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but her show tonight might be of interest as she did a debate recap by saying everyone single one of the candidates had a really good moment, then explained what and why and showed the clips. If you didn’t catch the debates, or didn’t see them all, it might interest you.

I watched the show too (mostly). It was a bit effortful for my tastes.  But she's so liakable, so it's hard not to appreciate her effort.

Harris is going to be a force. She is sharp, and can really connect emotionally (Something I don't think Warren is great at). If her, Warren, Buttigieg, Booker, and Castro are the last 5 standing... Democrats will be choosing from a great list. That would excite people.

I agree on your take with mayor Pete. He should run for higher office and get some experience. He has a great background, but some higher level political experience would be helpful. With that list of candidates, having him as a candidate after one of them are president would be great.

I *really* like Mayor Pete but hope he's honest enough to realize he's doing all of this for a cabinet position, or maybe even a VP nomination if he hits the right notes.

He's not ready for prime-time, as evidenced by his woeful lack of actual policy.

Warren/Buttigieg? Sign me the **** up, twice on Sunday.

This has been my ideal ticket for a minute.  I'd plug Harris into either spot, depending largely on how she can defend her prosecutorial record, which she really hasn't faced on the public stage as of yet.

Warren/Castro or Harris/Castro? I just really liked Castro.

Castro cites his Catholic upbringing as being important to who he is

https://religionnews.com/2019/06/25/julian-castro-its-amazing-to-see-democrats-put-in-a-box-of-not-living-up-to-our-moral-ideals/

Yet on the other hand he's firmly pro choice. Seems to me like he's playing both ends against the middle. A big whatever, but I was wondering if anyone else has an issue with it

Not all Catholics believe everything the church tells them to believe. Do you have the same problems with Catholics that complain about Pope Francis' attempts to turn the church more progressive?

Huh, interesting. I, unsurprisingly, would have no issue with that.

What I do take issue with is child molestation, and coverups thereof. The church has much still to answer for.

Nope and I am Catholic

Huh? Who doesn't have a problem with child molestation (Castro and other Catholics like myself included)?

What I was getting at is if he has such faith based Catholic conscience how can he be so strong on abortion. It actually makes no sense, nor does a lot of what he says (in my opinion)

It makes sense that a religious person would have their beliefs and actions influenced by said beliefs. I think that's great for them. Just don't try to use the government to promote religion. Promote ideals? Sure, no problem, even if I disagree with them.

But not your actual religion. Or any religion.

Castro would make a good advocate for undocumented non citizens but an awful president. What exactly does he mean by opposing "criminalizing desperation"???

Criminal acts are very much motivated by desperation. If the car jacker felt "desperate" to get that ride are we wrong to call him a criminal? Or does this only extend to people crashing the border?

Illegal immigration is just that. We cannot have open borders just for one group. If we allow it for those south of the border then we should have planes admitting Africans and Asians without any documentation. If we can't do it for them then why the heck are we supposed to do it for the people Castro is fighting for?

It's not fair and it's just not rational

Pro-choice Catholics--Biden, Pelosi, the Castro brothers, Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor,

I, too, am Catholic and have huge problems with some of the stances of the Church and continue to be outraged by their shielding of pedophiles.

Decriminalization doesn't mean open borders. It means going back to the way it was for hundreds of years, a civil matter. It doesn't mean they have a right to be here, they can still be deported, just as they were for hundreds of years before it was criminalized.

Nobody in America, except maybe some Amish, follow every single teaching of their bible.

If they did, half the population would be completely unshaven with uncut hair, women wouldn't be allowed to work in most career fields, people wouldn't work on the sabbath, and on and on.

So if Castro is not a genuine catholic, then there are no genuine Catholics or Christians in America. Or are there certain teachings that are ok to ignore and others that are not?

I'd say those that did the molesting, those that helped cover it up, and those that continued to support specific churches where these things were open secrets didn't seem to have a problem with it, for starters.

Your stance on abortion probably depends on when you think a fetus is a baby. For me, that would be around 25 weeks or so.... When it can live outside the womb. Most abortions occur long before that. I don't like late term abortions, and would advocate against them... but there are exceptions that don't deserve to be unreasonably burdened by legislation.

One thing i will agree with though, the Dems vocalization regarding immigration and health care likely hurts them in the general.

Nobody who agrees with providing health care to undocumented immigrants was ever considering voting for Trump. Perhaps they motivate a few voters who otherwise wouldn't have participated, but I doubt it's a significant amount.

I can defintely see a good number of people in the middle having a hard time with this, though.

Abortion is probably the single issue that I struggle with the most.

In the end, I consider myself pro-life and pro-choice.

Some will say that makes no sense or I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too, but I'll try to explain.

I don't like abortion. It makes me sad. I'd prefer there were many less abortions. There are simply way too many performed every year for me to believe that none of them were preventable.

So, in that regard, I guess I'm pro life.

On the other hand, it takes two to make a pregnancy, and I don't want the government forcing only one of those two people to carry an unwanted fetus to term. So I'm definitely pro choice as well.

Women 100% have the right to make that choice, IMO, as long as it's done before the fetus is viable outside the womb, I agree with badsmerf that it becomes a person at that point.

What I'd really like, is to find a way to make that a rare choice. What can we do? Better sex education? Better access to birth control? I don't know how we get there, or if it's even possible.

If you see people leaving mass at a Catholic Church on Sunday what percentage of the parishioners do estimate are complicit in such an exercise?

Very small in most cases, I'd imagine. Didn't mean to imply it was a majority.

But certainly it was a significant number of people, based on the size and scope of the abuses that we now know took place.

I'm sure some churches had higher rates than others. I can't believe that there weren't whispers at some of these churches where the worst abuses took place over decades.

I would hope the same courtesy is extended when someobe criticizes zealous anti-Amican Islam. "Not a majority but certainly a significant enough number"

Certainly. That's only a problem when people attempt to assign that to the entire faith, which happens a lot. It's a problem if people attempt to assign sexual abuse to the entire Catholic faith, as well.
