Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Catcher

no not really, but I bet they would like a veteran catcher to help Gallagher and the young pitching staff, the only other catcher currently with a shot to make the team is a hit tool kid who has only High-A experience.

Sure, but they can find guys like that without giving up real assets, so long as they don't care about their offensive game.

Some people here may be down on Castro, but he'd definitely cost legit prospects to acquire right now, especially within the division.

I am not so sure. The difference between his uncertain value due to injury/age and salary may be negligible. Where is the market? Are there enough buyers to drive up the prospect close?

There only needs to be a market if the Twins are desperate to move him, which they aren't right now.

Perhaps if they fall out of the race, and/or Garver or Astudillo cements themselves, but right now they'd need to be blown away to move him.

I'm not sure either, KC will obviously need better starting catcher options with Perez now injured, but they are going to be cellar dwellers this year no matter what they do, and it's doubtful they would give up much for a player like Castro.

I'm not sure that the Twins would want a ton, even within the division. His loss would save the team nearly 8 million and open up regular atbats for Garver and Astudillo, and their is seriously zero chance the team will keep him beyond this year anyways.

That said, KC could sign someone like Martin Maldonado for around 5-6 million and solve same situation, but either way the Twins will trade Castro at some point this year so if there is a match now might as well make it.

Castro is going to have a very good year because if he doesn't this will be his last year in baseball.

This means he could get flipped at the trade deadline if the Twins aren't in it. This also means that if Astudillo is "The #3 Catcher" we won't see him for a long time.

Ding ding ding!

Although if this was "The Price is Right", you would have gone over, unfortunately ($2.5 mil guarantee, $1.4 mil incentives).

this was a great deal for them, plus they can flip him at the deadline to another team in need of a catcher
