Per Nightengale, Twins Sign Adam Rosales (MiLB deal)

Bob Nightengale just tweeted that the Twins have signed 35-year-old veteran infielder Adam Rosales to a minor league deal.

Depth is good, but the March 19th out date means - in my opinion - that he is just getting an opportunity from the Twins to get some at bats, play some road games and hope that another team is interested. Maybe then the Twins can get some cash for him when they trade him.

He's played for Cincinnati, Oakland, Texas, San Diego, Oakland (again) and 13 games with Cleveland in 2018.

Eric Aybar replacement (and not even as good as Aybar).  After Aybar opted out last season he surfaced in the Mexican League ;)

March 19th this season is pretty much the equivalent of March 25 last season. Less than a week of ST left after the 19th

If this turns out to be a consequential signing, we're in for an inconsequential season.

AAA depth, or "wish you well", either way.

But not AAA depth because of the opt-out.

It's just spring training depth. Seems like just giving him some at bats and maybe some other team likes him enough to sign him when he opts out. If not, he could stay and be insurance for Gordon (though Dean Anna is that too).

The latter is exactly what I meant by AAA depth. He can't play that role unless we sign him, and apparently he wouldn't sign without the opt-out clause - so if he does invoke it then we wish him well, nothing much lost unless there was someone else we ought to have signed for the purpose instead.

That still doesn't mean I see it as likely that he has any role at all on the big club - but the thing about AAA depth is "never say never". I don't criticize such signings. I just don't want to contemplate the sequence of events that would cause it to be a necessity to bring him up.

I have to say I really don't understand signing like this or the Duda signing either. I would think it would make more sense to give this time in camp to marginal youngish prospects who have some hope of contributing to a ML team, someday. Older fringy guys like this, I really don't get this, though it seems most teams do this.
