Maybe I'm the only one who finds it sad that we, as a society, have gotten so sensitive that we're can be "triggered" by a freaking baseball cap.

If only that was the most mundane thing that can trigger some.  I was witness to a college student irate that a classmate had called them "buddy".

MAGA hats aren't even close to what passes for offensive these days, the bar is much, much lower.

Agree. This ultra heightened sensitivity is going to be a major contributing factor to our downfall, IMO.

It's not the cap it's the symbol, and symbols whether on flags, uniforms, or hats have always borne out significant reactions.   There are symbols I can think on a hat or a hoodie or whatever that would obviously trigger a reaction.  MAGA isn't as deplorable as some logos/symbols, but it is obvious that the hats stir-the-pot/poke-the-bear.

He didn't defend the Black Israelites, he said they could have been triggered by the MAGA hats.

Context helps us understand why people act like they do, but it doesn't give them a pass for how they actually act.

I realize they weren't receiving a full pass, but talking about how the BIs were triggered is shifting the focus. It's already been said, but the "why," isn't important here; their reputation speaks for itself.

Saying the BIs were triggered is just building a back door for them to crawl out of. It doesn't excuse their actions entirely, but it certainly softens what should be a harsh view of the group. In that regard I do think it's a bit of a defense.

I'll say it again: the reason the BIs aren't the focus is because they don't present a systemic threat (as awful as the are) like MAGA does.

I'm glad we agree that they shouldn't be the focus.

My issue is with shifting the attention towards MAGA hats as a pseudo defense after it became obvious the original reporting wasn't close to accurate.

I tend to think the systemic threat, because it spills into unwitting situations like this, deserves the focus, not the low-population/influence hate group, which nonetheless should be part of the story, and the feature even in other prominent stories.

Turns out it wasn't two white men in the Smollett case either.  They've arrested two Nigerian men.

I hope, at some point, there is a realization that jumping to conclusions too quickly actually hurts the forward momentum of justice for those hurt by racist or homophobic behavior.

And now those two men are innocent of assault and Smollett was an "active participant".

False victimhood has been around for awhile, but social media is gas on that fire.  This was outrageous and an insult to real victims.

Yeah... This whole staged attack is shameful for numerous reasons. The actual victims of this type of violence are disrespected to the n'th degree. If it is confirmed, I really hope there is a huge backlash against him.... including being fired from Empire.

I've often stated that those who report incidents falsely should face the same punishment of the crime they said was perpetrated. In other words, you stage and carry out an assault, you should be punished in the same manner as the person who actually commits an assault. But maybe that is too 'an eye for an eye'.

I've often heard that, but we know victims come forward at a very small rate relative to the number of victims there actually are.  I go back and forth on that idea.  Incidents like this make me really want that punishment....but then you hear about the struggles rape victims face and I go the other way.

Either way, this dude just destroyed his career.

It's pretty messed up to commit a felony and fabricate SAT/ACT scores, "athletic" profiles, etc. AND bribe to get your kid in college.

Once they're in, what did they expect? For their little Sammy and Sally to start getting better at school? There are plenty of kids left behind in college, and you can't really cheat your way to getting a decent degree.

Why stop cheating once you're in?  These kids may not have been able to do well on SAT etc, but I imagine they can get enough "tutoring" to get the Cs to get the degree.

And now we have the Russell Westbrook situation. If what he said about the fan is true he's an idiot. To go on a rant like that over what he claimed the guy said he needs to be pressed.

To characterize get on your knees as a racial thing is insanity. These cries of "racism" are pathetic. It only serves to water down REAL claims of racism.

I think Westbrook went racism because he knew he screwed up so he dealt that card from the bottom of the deck. Pathetic

Did you read the statement released by the Jazz?

This is what college is in our country. Something rich spoiled kids bribe people for so they can go and party and enjoy sports experiences.

Ugh. Said it before, I'll say it again - time to blow the whole thing up. It's beyond broken.

Low-end elites trying to finagle what the true elites accomplish with the endowment of a building or a professorship. Imagine the nerve of these nouveau-riche trying to go above their station!

YES I know the fan was banned

You hear Westbrook's rant and explanation for why he was ready to

F-up the man's wife?

Again. Going by Westbrook's own account (which is different from the fan's) he is way WAY over the line

So, reading the statement and just generally weighing the evidence, you believe the fan’s account?

At no point was Westbrook threatened. For him to threaten the man AND HIS WIFE is out of control.

Westbrook doesn't take a word back. He claims to have "defended his family"

Make me understand how that is a rational though

Westbrook is a rich basketball star... Of course he overreacted. Him and the fan are both dumb. However, Westbrook was provoked by the fan, and I'm doubting it was only once. Westbrook was also fined, this fan is just simply banned. Fair trade off imo.
