Will the Twins sign outside help for the bullpen?

I think there is something to developing your own pitchers, that necessarily involves starting them in the pen.

That's the way Johan Santana did it with the Twins. The Cardinals do that a lot, too.

Earn your way. Learn and grow.

If you have success, there will be a role, but, the process of development holds precedence.

I’m hoping Romero does his best Dellin Betances impression this year. Probably starts the year in AAA because they can and is hopefully first man up with an injury or poor performance from one of the guys in the bullpen who are out of options and therefore on their last chance with this team.

If he starts the year in AAA will he be in their bullpen? Try to ramp him back up to start?

I also wonder that if Romero blows a few leads and is sent down during the season for poor performance. Does he slide into Rochester's bullpen, or get him ramped up to start next season?

I WANT the Twins to improve not only their bullpen but the team as a whole. And I'm not saying to not sign Britton...but I just don't get this idea at all.

There were a number of high quality, experienced bullpen arms available on the market. For the most part, they all signed for between $8-11M per. And now we are talking about $20M for Britton?

How about the $3.5M spent on Perez...which I still really don't understand...this proposed $20M for Britton, toss on another $7-8M, and you could have one of those other BP arms AND Corbin...maybe...or Keuchel. And you'd still be a couple $M below last season's payroll!

And if you are OK matching last season, or exceeding it slightly, you could STILL sign Perez, and maybe another quality bench option like Cabrera or Flores or the still un-signed Solarte for depth and options.

I'm not asking to break the bank. And I know we're talking some extensions as well. But this not only makes sense, more payroll comes off the books next offseason, and anual recenues seem to keep increasing, at least marginally ever year.

I do think that the signing of Perez means that Romero will be int he Bullpen unless there's an injury. Stewart's quote suggest he's expecting to start the season in AAA so Mejia is the one on the bubble with Perez.  One in the rotation, one in the BP, with Romero starting in mid relief but moving towards a late inning role.

I can get behind both Mejia and Romero in the pen if they are multiple IP guys, especially Romero, with the idea of moving back to the rotation. Just not sure either, or both, won't be better than Perez in not only the long term, but short term as well.

I'll be annoyed if they convert Romero to relief, only to put him in a middle relief role.

My preference is that he keep starting, but if not, he needs to be a late inning difference maker.

I see him as a starter in the minors. Could keep him in the bullpen if you wanted. Just make sure he’s continuing to work on his off speed stuff, control. If you’re worried about building up a starters arm strength he can throw bullpens for that.
