2018 NFL Tidbits

I've merged the Colin Kaepernick discussion with the NFL Tidbits thread. At this time the Vikings forum basically just has game threads, a Vikings news thread and a NFL news thread. Also, yes, I'd prefer not to embroil the larger Twins community in this contentious discussion, there's a reason that Sports Bar threads don't pop up on the home page.

I'm not sure you can sign a QB and play them four days later, just to hit this from a practical perspective.

The more salient point with Kaepernick is that even if there are 30 better QBs (there are not, FWIW), he's for sure in the top 60.  If Sam Bradford can get paid (hilariously), Kap should've too.  The best explanation for why he's not being paid is collusion.

Agreed. Redskins had time to make that move though. I can see the case for him being signed and not play the first week, but at least have a plan. Guaranteed Kaep can go out and throw 3 interceptions. Especially with an extremely liberal, and diverse fan base, Redskins would be the place to pull the trigger.

Kaepernik will not sign with any team. It is a bad business decision for him to do so. Other than one year the 49ers had mediocre results with him. That is why they went a different direction. Kepernick plays mediocre football there goes his lawsuit.  It would prove why teams would have offered a reduced contract like Denver did, or a pittance like Pete Carroll did. Carroll did him a favor by withdrawing the offer.  Carroll likely has no love for the NFL administration with the number of fines he gets.

Mediocre QB's are worth 10+ million per year in the NFL.

Hell, Bradford got more than double that and he isn't even mediocre.  And there are other examples too.

I'm not sure if Kaep would actually be better than McCoy FWIW.  His play was starting to tail off before the league pulled the shenanigans to oust him.  And he's been out of football for awhile now.

So Kaepernick should sign a league minimum salary to be a starting quarterback? If he was given a legitimate chance, like Colt McCoy just was, he would do fine. There is no chance in my mind McCoy is at the same level.

McCoy got a 2 year 7m deal. Kaepernick walked away from a 4.5 for one year deal.  I doubt that he would have signed even a Colt McCoy deal. In a hard cap league comparing the two when one wouldn't have signed for what the other is paid is moot. Had Kaepernick played out the contract and not beat out Hoyer he has no Nike deal, no victim platform. Don't forget that keynote and motivational speaking are great paydays that do not involve getting hit in the head. Remember that that Kaepernick lost time to the likes of Gabbert, an NFL starter's job for essentially a failed quarterback without pedigree of college hardware or first round pick.

I also remember Kaepernick almost making the super bowl not long ago. Nobody ever said he was Tom Brady, but he has had success, and want terrible even though his team was (and still is).

Kapernick had a good year, got a good contract for that time. That his team was close to the Superbowl  was as likely a peak for the receiving corps and Frank Gore as the qb play. No Gore or Crabtree, Davis and Bolden peaked and then the team can't win with Kapernick

I'm glad they did. They have a conscious. He is more than deserving to never receive another NFL paycheck again.

A conscious, or a PR department?

They had no intention of disciplining him, until the video was leaked.

From August:

Andy Reid:

After those incidents, Hunt said Andy Reid’s message to him was simple.

“Just move forward and focus on football,” Hunt said the Chiefs coach told him.

Team Chairman:

“The team’s made up of a bunch of young men,” Clark Hunt said Saturday. “They’re not always going to make the best decisions, but we have a strong support system, both with the coaching staff and also with our player development department that works with young guys and talks to them about the situations that they want to be in.

“Kareem is a young man, second year in the league, obviously had a very big year on the field last year. I’m sure he learned some lessons this offseason and hopefully won’t be in those kind of situations in the future.”

Clark Hunt added he doesn’t believe the running back will face any suspension time but he isn’t always privy to those decisions made by the NFL.

Yep, this is pure PR. I'd love to see the Vikings pick him up.

I want to make this clear - I in no way condone what Hunt did.  I wish he would've been charged.

That said...I can all but guarantee there are a dozen guys on the Vikings right now who have done far worse and we don't know it.  The element of video cannot be understated.

I'm not sure this incident rises to the level of banishment for Hunt.  It's not Ray Rice.  Hell, it's not even Joe Mixon.

I guess I'm of the opinion that football players are football players. They make mistakes, but they aren't our representatives deciding policy... and some have less standards for those positions. Give the guy a chance to make it right somehow. I don't know many details, because I don't really care what NFL players do or are caught doing. There is obviously a line that can be crossed, but I just refuse to put professional athletes on a pedestal.

I don't think you need to put them on a pedestal to care about their behavior.

If the chef at my favorite restaurant did this, I would find another place to eat. If my mechanic did this, I would find a new shop. I wouldn't patronize any place that I know employs people who assault women.

Sure, people deserve a chance to change, but redemption doesn't happen overnight.

Agreed. There should be something built into the NFL for this. Suspensions and earring their way back into the league. To me, the policy is too inconsistent right now.

How much power does McCarthy have in personnel decisions? The Packers have had one of the best qbs in the league for years, and have failed to put a team around him. That should get somebody fired.

None, but the entire FO was cleaned out during the offseason. McCarthy was the lone holdover.

I don't think that's true. Rodgers is a bit overrated here but before Barr broke his shoulder, they had won 10 or more games 7 out of 8 seasons. I don't think the Packers were ever the most talented team in the NFC but they had a boat load of talent, won one super bowl and lost one of the most insane playoff games ever to the Seahawks. The last two years have been brutal for them in large part b/c Rodgers isn't the same guy he was but it's false to say that they never put a team around Rodgers. They absolutely did. Since 09, they had a top 10 defense 5x and a top 10 offense 7x.

Great job Carroll-Dickson-or whoever. Worst on-side kick in NFL history, like, literally, the worst ever.lol

Should have dragged Janikowski off his death bed to attempt it.

I only saw the last 2 minutes, so I'm surprised Seattle wasn't able to score more often. Cowboys are going to get crushed next week.

I had half an eye on most of it. Seattle was punting a lot. Lost their kicker at half time; looked like a pulled hammy attempting a long FG at half but didn't hear exactly.

Yep, Dallas goes on the road next week and probably gets overwhelmed at either destination.

How do you go into a game with literally no backup plan if your kicker ruptures a hamstring? I know rosters aren't inexhaustible, but from all appearances their punter had never had any repetitions at place-kicking and was just winging it.
