I'm Bored of the Offseason

Why is it in baseball we have to wait for weeks on end for anything to happen in free agency? In other sports like football and basketball top free agents sign within hours of free agency opening up.

Take a page out of other major sports' playbooks baseball. We want HOT free agent news, and we want it now!

If the GMs make all their moves early the owners might see little reason to fund their week of living decadent at the Winter Meetings, which this year I believe is being held in Vegas.

My kids do this too. They hold off on doing homework or cleaning their rooms knowing if they get me anxious enough I'll start offering bribes.

My memory is hazy but it felt like in the past there were big trades and FA signings happening at the GM meetings. Now I don't know what they do other than go to a warm weather city to get a tan.

Right now the decision makers in front offices are in one of two locations:

- At home with their families

- Vacationing somewhere warm and expensive (* most likely)

I'm sure the workers in the trenches are mostly working on data for the later moves and watching who gets released for anyone interesting ... but no big decisions will come for a while.

Terry Ryan liked to make a move or two before heading off to the Caribbean or wherever but most GMs don't.

It does seem odd.....Corbin is the easy choice for best SP. In any other league, he'd be signed by now....and we'd all be talking about why team X didn't sign him, and who all the others will now prioritize.

It used to be that the first signing was the biggest, and that signing set the market value for everybody else. This has changed. Now the scrubs go earlier and the expensive guys go later.

I see no reason a team couldn't disrupt all of this and grab the good guys right away, leaving the other teams having to fight over the scraps as the Twins had to do every year. Teams are afraid of overpaying now, though.

Other sports have rapid fire free agency. Maybe it's fitting that the MLB is a more methodical event.

IMO the rapid fire nature is what makes the offseason fun for other sports. I enjoy looking at the hot rumors saying "LeBron James is flying out to LA for a visit! Will he sign?" There's nothing like that in baseball...

Right. Or at the very least we would read that Corbin is visiting with the Cubs today, and potentially visiting the Yankees tomorrow unless Theo makes him an offer he can't refuse. Instead it's radio silence until the minute they sign somewhere.

I don't need signings, but some chatter about rumors would be nice. Honestly, I didn't even know players COULD sign right now. I thought we were in some kind of mandatory freeze period or something.

Free agents could technically start signing with other teams on November 3rd! 10 days of minimal rumors...

field of dreams is a terrible, boring, awful, movie.....

https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2017/02/13/field-of-dreams-is-absolutely-terrible/

That review is trying very hard. The lack of developed relationship between father and son is a feature not a bug. And it's fairly artful conceit, given that the story is really about loss. That the audience measures that loss through reflection on their own lives, shouldn't be counted against the film.  It wasn't as if the film lacked character development or textured relationships.

Field of Dreams is sentimental, magical/realistic, and 1980s rough, so one has to be willing to suspend disbelief more than usual.  It's not for everyone.  But for what it endeavors to be, I don't think it could be described as awful--maybe it's just not your kind of thing, like campy humor?
