Are the Twins calling up Herrmann?

Twins purchased the contract of C Chris Herrmann from Double-A New Britain.

He'll provide some depth while Joe Mauer (back) and Ryan Doumit (oblique) are nursing injuries. Herrmann, 24, batted .276/.350/.392 with 10 homers and a .741 OPS in 127 games at the Double-A level this year.

I don't think so...he starts in Arizona soon and they want players there for the duration. He's not on the 40-man and no need to add him early. The Twins would do better to just add Rivera or Towles, if need be. Remember quite a few years ago when LeCroy was on his last legs in the minors and had gone home, but was recalled just-in-case after batting a pitiful .190+ at AAA after his return from Washington. Got like 7 games of work. But then the Twins have the 40-man roster full. Maybe they could finally then move Capps to the 60-day if they wanted to add someone else. I would give it to Rivera...as a bonus for sticking with the Twins another season........

It turns out it's happened, this is the Twins version of fasttrack. Check out Rene Rivera's Twitter account. He's not happy about the Twins decision, probably the end of the road for both he and Towles, but then, they helped determine the end themselves by their performances.

It's official and Rene Rivera is not happy about it!! Here is what the journeyman catcher tweeted, "I guess I should not expect promises to be kept. Best of luck to everyone #Disappointed #Lies"

I'm happy for Herrmann. He was being added to the 40 an roster anyway. HE's Ryan Doumit-Lite... he's a tremendous left fielder who continues to get better behind the plate. He walks quite a bit and hits some doubles. 3 versatile catchers on next year's roster is intriguing!

Wait, is he a slimmed-down version of Ryan Doumit? Because if he's a "tremendous left fielder" he bears little resemblance to Ryan Doumit.;)

This is great news for Herrmann and he did deserve this promotion. Now I hope that the Twins do the right thing and let Butera go. I do understand Rivera's frustration (and this is not because of Herrmann) but because he has been the best of the 3 Catchers who started the season in Rochester and Butera has been collecting an MLB paycheck because of his last name, while he was making a fifth. Yes money matters to folks and if they see worse people promoted and get fat paychecks (in any business) they leave.

That simple.

Herrmann isn't tall, and he's stocky, but he's a good athlete and can run a bit. One person told me that when he was in the FSL, he was the best defensively LF in the league. Doumit has much more power though.

I get the money thing for sure... but I don't think that Butera was/is any worse than Rivera. Butera's significantly better defensively, and they're pretty much the same offensively, slight edge to Rivera, maybe.

That is a suburban legend and for some reason has propagated like crazy. And really ask anyone who played with both Butera and Rivera (or even better a pitcher who they caught) about them (off the record) and you might get a true story.

Here is a litmus test:

We have seen Butera's passed balls and throws to CF (or hitting the P on the back) the last 2 seasons and his whole "defensive" play. This season we are also blessed to see the defensive play of a guy who was named the worst defensive catcher in the majors (Doumit.) Think about Doumit behind the plate and think about Butera behind the plate. Do you see much difference? I really don't

The upside is that if he only plays three times a month, it doesn't matter much.

Well, other than preventing the team from having someone who could contribute on the team instead.

Three times a month. When the pitching staff is this bad, I'm not going to get too fired up about Son of Sal.

Still, he shouldn't be here.

There is no good reason for Butera to be on an MLB roster.

This is true if you also think that a team playing with a 24 man roster (often 23 because of the "day-to-days" ) against teams with 25 men, does not matter much

Please play well Herrmsie, the Twins need any excuse they can to get rid of Butera. Please, for the sake of our sanity and all that's good and holy in this world, play well enough to convince the Twins that Butera can finally get DFA'd for good.

In a season this bad, no, I don't think it matters much.

Exactly. Especially with the same team having a penchant for not DLing players. I know most backup catchers are bad, but Butera is bad even for that threshold.

Given Doumit and Mauers' playing off catcher so often, we need a good 3rd catcher who can catch but doesn't waste a roster spot on someone who can't do anything besides catch (hit, run, play outfield). It seems like a great idea to have 3 catchers like Mauer, Doumit, and Hermann on the roster next year. We need versatility from that other catcher spot.

Mauer: C, 1B, DH

Doumit: C, DH, RF?

Hermann: C, LF, RF

I kinda expect Gardy to sabatoge Hermann over the last 18gms or so ;)....playing him against tough lefties (Sabathia/Sale next trip etc) & limiting his possible success, so as protect his boy Drews #3 status!!!!

Hermann thought he was done & now will make about 50K over the next 3wks.....not a bad gig!!!!

The 25'th person on the roster would matter on playng other teams when they have a number 1-4 starter and the Twins do not.

Right, because other teams don't have poor hitting players and don't have anyone who's day to day. I just counted, 27 teams have listed a player as day to day in the last 3 days. 20 of them had a player listed as day to day today (the 14th).

Exactly. Herrmann replacing Butera's time, filling in a bit more for Mauer and Doumit (esp. if Morneau is no longer on the team) as the catcher, and being a 5th OF should get him about 200 plate appearances and he can be very effective in the role for the Twins through the duration of Doumit's contract.

An aggressive team would have Hermann on the Roster next year. I predict he is in AAA to start the year, with Butera somehow keeping his job and being up here instead. The will say "He needs some AAA at bats to get ready" or something like that.

Likely, but this is in 2013. 2 games with the Twins, Herrmann is still warming the pine while Butera started both. Let's see him in a game in September first and then we can talk about next season.

Gardy said pregame that he doesnt plan on playing Hermann alot since he hasnt played for 2wks & is afraid of getting him hurt

LEN3 disagrees:

"Hermann: Gardenhire said he's committed to playing catcher-outfielder Chris Hermann, who was called up because of the Mauer-Doumit situation. Gardenhire, however, is trying to put his best team on the field to face the contending White Sox and probably won't give Hermann a shot until they get to Cleveland."
