Depends on how they're used. Santiago in a long-relief, spot-starter sort of role is a "solid" addition.

Last year as a reliever, he tossed 74 1/3 innings over 43 appearances, with a 3.87 ERA and 10.4 K/9. Nothing earth-shattering, but for a million dollars as a long relief type, that's a solid pickup.

you can't say that he has value as a spot starter then not include his starting statistics in your praise of him.

He made all his starts in 2018 in a one-month period. He made 7 starts with a 6.12 ERA. Not being deceptive or anything at all. He really worked well in that role.

The Brewers are in agreement on a contract with free-agent catcher Yasmani Grandal, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Twitter). It’s a one-year contract for Grandal. Yahoo’s Tim Brown reports that Grandal will be guaranteed $18.25MM in 2019.

You get a one year deal! You get a one year deal! Everyone gets a one year deal!!!

Apparently Grandal was offered a 4/$60M deal by the Mets, so I'm surprised he didn't jump on that one. Obviously $18.25M is more per year, but with the injury potential as a catcher, I think it'd be wise to chase a longer deal.

Machado update

https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-sports-manny-machado-yankees-20190109-story.html

Money quote. G Stanton was signed/extended 13/325 by the Marlins (yes, the Marlins) in 2014. Stanton was traded to the Yankees of course. But in response to Machado wanting Stanton-type money, a source says: "good luck with that."

He’s going to end up with the White Sox and everyone will be shocked.

No...but let's see how much Dozier makes over the next 3 yrs, which is the comparison.

If he rebounds he will by-pass the 12 million needed with room to spare.

Another year like this one and the other players who play 2B will drown him.

Regardless... This was his year. It didn’t happen.

Well, and I’ll be furious, too! Because if the White Sox can get him, so could we.

I don't agree. Chicago is the 3rd biggest city in America.

I doubt he'd even answer the phone if we called.

He's going to a mega market, exception being an elite team like Houston.

He's going to get more money than he could spend no matter where he signs, so I don't think we could make up for being a losing team in flyover country by offering more money.

The White Sox market is really not that big, though. And Chicago is not a baseball town despite having two teams here. They are a football town first and foremost. Then it's Cubs. Then it's Bulls and Blackhawks. Then it's Fire. Then it's Sky.

It's not about the team. It's the big city lifestyle. World class restaurants, high end shopping on Michigan Avenue, big city nightlife. That's what Machado and Harper are going to be looking for, again possibly excepting an elite team like Houston.

They are going to NY, LA, Chicago, Boston or San Francisco.

When did we become a large market team? Do you remember how popular Joe Mauer's contract was with the board? When the deal was first done, BA said we would run into problems because Mauer's and Morneau's contracts were too large a percentage of our payroll. That was far from the only reason we needed to rebuild in 2012, but it played it's part.

Yanks out of the Machado sweepstakes?

Ugh ... he'll be with the White Sox and that will be a huge mistake for us if that happens. Unless, of course, the Phillies are willing to pay the money he wants. I don't think the White Sox will outbid them, but ... stranger things have happened. This big market, small market stuff ... and how he won't come here is bogus ... he'll go where he gets the most money. Personally, I think it will be worth it to a) have him on our team and b ) not to play against him within the division.

I feel that Harper will wind up back with the Nats,  Machado is an interesting candidate, because Boras wants top dollar and his market is slipping badly.  Boris will still get an overpay as market slips and more mid market teams enter.  Might well be either a long term contract with multiple op outs for both sides, or shorter term 2- 4 years with an op out and a high AAV, like $160 for 4 years with an op out after 2.

It seems like it. I don’t really see how LaMahieu fits in there and it’s an overpay to me.

I wonder if we’ll see Machado and Harper wait into the regular season to get their monstrous deals? I feel like one of them will.

What you are seeing with the almost certain strike after 2021, most teams do not want to write contracts longer than 2021.

Good observation. I wouldn't be surprised if you are correct. You know ... this answers Mike's observation in the other forum about the Twins and not having any contracts on the books after 2020 ... or something like that.

I have a feeling Moncada is about to bust out. Machado and Moncada could be good for a long time.

I would love to offer 3/120, 4/160 or 5/200 to Machado and have him for his peak years...and not pay him post peak years. Can you imagine our lineup? He is a top 5 player in the league. These opportunities do not happen very often. Hope we at least try.

Twins have no money on the books I believe after this year.  The issue with the strike could be a reason for most teams not writing contracts into 2022.  That issue could be if the players in a strike would have to be paid because they have a signed deal.
