Eovaldi 4/67

Not exactly a bargain...but pretty good I suppose value-wise.

Personally, I like that contract better than the Corbin deal from a team perspective.  I'd be popping champagne if the Twins had done that.  But hey, Adrianza!

It's happened around the league before and sure could happen again. Wouldn't be horrible on the Twins to do it, especially if someone like Rooker/Austin/etc. force the move.

Would Cron be the most expensive arbitration termination pay case ever? Emilio Bonifacio got $574k, which was 30 days termination pay on his $3.5 mil contract because the Royals cut him before March 15. That would be equivalent to $787k on Cron's $4.8 mil contract.

But if the Twins waited until after March 15, presumably necessary for "Rooker/Austin/etc. to force the move" via spring performance, it would be 45 days termination pay, or $1.18 mil.

And that's only if he's cut in spring training, and never sees a day on the regular season roster. Once opening day hits, the salary is 100% guaranteed.

Seems like this is the narrative of the Offseason. Limited market.

I wouldn't extrapolate to the market as a whole. The exec's comment pertained to Machado. He's known to expect a very large contract; front offices like the Twins' probably say to themselves, why even invest the time.

Billy Hamilton heading to KC.

Between Hamilton, Mondesi and Merrifield, KC has a ton of speed...and also a really good defensive outfield. They might not hit very well, but they are shaping up to be a good defensive/small ball team that will annoy the crap out of you.

The part about player makeup was thought-provoking. I think any analytically oriented front office should be working on assembling the most comprehensive database they can, with regard to the things that would drive them nuts about a player if they were to acquire them. It's not quantifiable, maybe, so one doesn't think of it as analytics - but we should. It's information, even if it's not data per se.

If I had a team I would task someone on every minor-league coaching staff to watch the other dugout with an eagle eye and add to the master database with anything that looks amiss with one of their players - with emphasis on consistent ways of watching.

Big-data mining people like Nate Silver (who used to be in the baseball world) can do wonders by sifting through such information. Individual bits of gossip or quick impressions may seem worthless, but in enough quantity you can start to see patterns. Joe Blow on the other team was sulking after the center fielder botched a play behind him? Write it down!!! Another guy didn't sulk when that happened? Write that down too.

I have to admit that I really like what the Phillies have done this offseason. They've probably added 7-8 wins between the Segura trade, McCutchen signing and moving Hoskins out of the outfield to replace Santana.

Your next Twin "Value" signing

"Tulo can play a little short when we need it and will be able to handle DH duties...we couldn't pass up the bargain for the former MVP...oh, wait...what??? he never won the MVP?"

Idk, depends on how much they'd sign him for, but I might be able to get behind rolling the dice on a high risk/high reward Tulo/Schoop bounce-back middle infield...there could still be plenty of at bats for Polanco rotating between SS/3B/2B/DH if they did it right, and it would help keep Tulo and Sano in particular fresh throughout the season. Not my first choice, but I'd still rather have Tulo/Schoop/Sano/Polanco than Schoop/Sano/Polanco/Adrianza.

Billy Hamilton is worth 4.25M plus a 7.5M option year? I thought he had MiLB deal with spring training invite written all over him.

If stolen bases are still worth 4.25M, I think you could have coaxed Ricky Henderson out of retirement. He could still top Hamilton's .600 OPS.

Odds are that Adrianza is the better baseball player in 2019.  I'd give Tulo a ST invite and maybe even gamble a one year deal on him if I'm willing to cut bait.

But we are long, long removed from his elite play.  Colorado sold on him right before the utter collapse.

Oh, I agree 100% that it would have to be a one-year deal that the team could easily swallow if he's toast, and even that would be dependent on medicals. I do wonder, though, how long those bone spurs were bothering him and how much they affected his play before he finally went under the knife...but you're probably right, best to watch from a distance if he can bounce back playing for another team.

It's also his age, position, and declining defense.  Even if we captured magic in a bottle, it'd likely be short lived.  But I'm willing to take a gamble on upside.
