Article: Miguel Sano Detained In Dominican Republic

Recommended Posts

Do you folks have more infrmation than what was posted by Seth? His report was that a vehicle Sano was in came in contact with a police officer. Everyone seems to assume he was the driver. Anyone know definitively? There may have been gun shots? Nothing concrete in that statement either, but it seems to be an accepted fact in some comments. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, could it be possible that Sano was riding with a friend and a policeman was hit? Is it possible the friend's car backfired when it stopped sounding like a gunshot? Maybe Mr. Sano offered to pay medical expenses to help out his friend and to be a good citizen? A lot of conclusions drawn from a vague report.

I took a look around to see if there was any more information out there this morning, and it appears the USA Today article is still the most concrete reporting we have on the situation. Here's how they worded things:

"Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano was detained by police in the Dominican Republic after a traffic incident early Sunday morning during which Sano ran over a police officer.

Sano struck officer Argenis Emilio Gillandeux with his vehicle, leaving him with a broken leg. The officer was on duty outside the nightclub Riversay in San Pedro de Macoris, according to the police report.

Sano was driving a vehicle without license plates and did not have his ID."

I'd like to say "this is what happens when you get a six million dollar bonus as a teenager" but other players get huge bonuses to sign, stash the money, and go on to become good major league players.

Whats does this say about Sano's character??!

Signing young players is such a crap shoot.

I dunno, man. There is footage of him doing batting practice in DR for prospective teams. He had a huge entourage, even then. That's a red flag. Which other Twins have giant entourages, or entourages at all?

This situation sure makes me appreciate all the wonderful things I read (here) about the good "character" of young players such as Lewis, Kiriloff, and others. I agree with the comment much earlier that it is getting harder and harder to cheer for MS, and there is increasingly less that warrants a cheer on the field or off.

Damnit Sano you’re making everyone fight in here!! Everyone chill out and breathe! It’ll be ok.

If only there was a way for Twins Daily to set up some mechanism for keeping discussions of difficult topics on track and civil. Oh, wait...

Moderator's Note: If you see a post that you feel violates TD posting standards, use the Report button. Otherwise, if you simply disagree with a fellow poster's opinion, and don't feel like rebutting it on its substance, move on after reading it. Don't try to police the site yourself. A diversity of opinion is encouraged here, and on a topic like this is to be completely expected. "Fighting" isn't allowed; so far I haven't really seen that in this thread.

There you go, treated like a prima donna from a young age.

This ESPN story has a very, VERY different version of events.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24931089/minnesota-twins-miguel-sano-face-charges-accident-police-say

Apparently, this was a misunderstanding. He wasn't stopped. He was talking to the officer after he left the club then accidentally backed up over his foot, not realizing the officer was still there. He was detained for a few hours but is only being issued a ticket for not having a license plate.

Kind of irritating how things came out initially, especially with the "fired his gun in the air" part.

ESPN just released an updated report. Apparently he isn't going to be charged. Backed as he was leaving the club and then drove the officer to the hospital. Whether it's true or not who knows, but that's the current story.

I do find it interesting that there's no mention of gunshots in this account.

From there:

""The citizen, Miguel Sano, was sent today to the traffic court to comply with the due process in these types of cases," said Duran. "It is a formality when someone is injured in a vehicular accident. It is important to clarify that the policeman declared that the accident was not intentional, and that Sano hit his leg when Sano was reversing his vehicle to leave the place and that the baseball player was the first to provide help and never abandoned the scene. Neither the agent nor the national police plan to charge Sano with anything.""

I hope that this is it with the media witch hunt.

Well, I still wish he was in Fort Myers, and I still wish he wasn't in clubs at 3 am.  That's independent of what happened or didn't happen last night.   Hopefully the summer nutrition work hasn't completely fallen away from him.

If he takes any supplements this winter I hope they come from Fort Myers.

But again, he gets to live his life and I get to wish my wishes.

Fortunately, this sounds like a genuine accident. Not nearly as nefarious as it was first implied.

Though goodness, driving without an ID and license plate? Sano needs to start making some better choices.

I was out until 3am with my future wife in my mid 20s too. Didn't make me as awful a person as some of you jumped to in this thread.

Other things might make me awful, but not that in and of itself.

Not implying that makes anyone an awful person.  Just saying that if that were my multi-million dollar player and potential franchise cornerstone I would prefer that he not get into those situations.  Regardless of any values or ethical judgement, it's a risky situation.

Certainly, but I think others took your thinking farther in this thread to places far less justified.

I saw Taylor Motter walking a golden doodle on the plaza after a game this year.
