Article: Offseason Primer: Corner Infield Free Agents

Recommended Posts

From the sound of it Machado doesn't want an opening at SS or 3B, he just wants an opening at SS. I don't see the Dodgers moving the defensively superior Seager, who is also a really good offensive player, off of SS to acquiesce to Machado.

I'd guess the Twins couldn't get him, but I'd also bet the Dodgers don't make a huge effort as long as he continues to state that he only wants to play SS. My money would be on the Phillies; with their defensive experiments of Rhys Hoskins to the OF and Carlos Santana back to 3B and mid-season trades for both Jose Bautista and Asdrubal Cabrera, I'm not reading them as a team that is overly concerned about defense.

That's probably a good bet.  The Mets are the other team I'd place high on the list.

I wonder if the White Sox are also a darkhorse.

That's a good question.  I think ultimately someone caves to that idea, but I do wonder what that means for his market.  Who currently has a SS opening that might spend that much money?

The Dodgers ;)

Also the Phillies, and Diamondbacks for sure.

Others can definitely accommodate Machado.

I can't 'like' your post with the inclusion of that last team. I'd fear the 'like' would be misconstrued.

Thankfully, everything the White Sox touch these days turns to dust, so hopefully Machado and his agent have been paying attention and are superstitious.

The Twins can absolutely be in on this and offer to let him play SS.  I wish I could feel like hope about this is justified.

Well you certainly shouldn't feel any "hope" about it. Machado is not going to sign with the Twins, period. His market value is too high for the Twins to overpay him enough to make up for the reduced media exposure and reduced opportunities for perennial contention that he would get in Minnesota vs. NY, LA, Philly, etc.

Anyone who advances that sort of signing as what the Twins 'should' do is creating a fantasy world. Maybe you can pull it off in Out of the Park Baseball, but it's not something that happens in the real world.

Last off season the Brewers went and got good / very good MLB players......

I'd rather the Twins follow that model, than sign a bunch of mediocre, just above replacement level, players.

Either that or just go young and move on. Mauer does nothing for me. Adams is just a dh/1b.....they don't need more of those, not with Austin and Rooker and maybe Sano.......

Trading prospects for a proven commodity, can't do that, what happens if you the prospect you trades turns into a star?

or signing a 31 year old that averages a WAR of over 4 for six years, can't do that because he is too old.

Imagine how up in arms people would have been if the Twins traded Romero, Kepler and say Wade for Yelich last year?
