Girls Inc Commercial

Is it just me or is the scene for the statistic on abuse a bit over the top? It appears to be a father putting his hand on his daughter's shoulder while possibly asking about her day, answering a homework question or something like that.

I know nothing about the org and have no problem with the rest of the commercial and on the surface would agree with the message, but that scene made me say "Really?"

If you mean what I saw at around the 0:41 mark in this

it's not just his hand on her shoulder, it's the "oh not again" look in her eyes, that is meant to convey that this relationship is going wrong.

You could shoot the scene the same way but with a brighter and more open expression on her face and it would be worlds different. But that of course wouldn't illustrate the horrifying statistic that they're trying to address.

Not to mention, the lingering touch doesn't seem in keeping with routine algebra help. It looks like he's trying to page through the book with one hand when it would be easier with two.

As the father of a (grown) daughter, I take no personal offense at that scene. I think the video director got it, spot on.

That version of the video makes it look more in line with what they are trying to say. I had not seen this longer unedited version. The chopped version that they show on FSN is all I have seen. The abuse scene is way shorter. The pregnancy scene isn't even shown. IMO, the editors chop the abuse scene too much. They also never show the part where she tosses his hand. I'll admit that I probably don't focus 100% on each frame during commercials, but I would bet that I'm in the majority there.

I have a 13 yo daughter, so I'd be lying if I said any of those four statistics have never at least worried me in passing.

I guess I just don't care for the editors work in this case. I understand that they probably only have so many seconds in a spot.

Conversely I didn't see the FSN version of the ad - mlb.tv substitutes other stuff. The full scene seems nuanced, so I can imagine something being lost if edited too severely for time.

Maybe if you feel strongly you can contact the organization and lay out your reasons that they need to go back to the "director's cut". :)
