Article: REPORT: Twins to Promote Kohl Stewart for His MLB Debut

Recommended Posts

According to AZ Phil if Stewart were waived unclaimed and outrighted to AAA he would be rule 5 eligible.

Whether or not he would be claimed if waived, and/or drafted via rule 5, I’m not sure. I might be tempted to sneak him through waivers when rosters expand in September.

I know. But he would absolutely, 100% be claimed if placed on waivers. If only by a team that tries to put him through waivers themselves in the near future, although I'm guessing someone would keep him long enough to option for awhile next year, at least.

Trending up because it was so low to begin with, perhaps. Stewart had a 17.5% K rate at AAA this year, versus a league average of 22.0%. (Admittedly was higher at AA this year but was still only league average, and he was also in his 3rd year there.)

You are certainly welcome to express a different opinion, but it's not fair to characterize "I think his future is in the bullpen" as an opinion overly reliant on a single play by Adrianza. In fact, it's probably a statement that could apply to most AAA starters, not necessarily a stretch or a knock to apply it to Stewart too.

I had to go back and read my original reply.

The only stated support for the bullpen career was today’s performance. I think it is foolish to think that a month or two of play is going to tell us anything about a player much less one start. I reacted to the original support. I agree with what your assessment of his career thus far. Had that been the original statement in support I would not have hit reply.

That's not a fair reading. If I said "I think Miguel Sano's future is at 1B or DH. He missed 3 plays at 3B today." You wouldn't assume that my only supporting evidence is his play today; it's just the latest evidence.

Of course, it is fair to question that evidence too. I just thought it was phrased a bit unfairly.

Glad to see they are trying out prospects in early August and not 35+ year old washed up veterans.  Interesting watching Stewart.  My own two cents: he's not going to be a starter in this league without an "out" pitch but he could be a good BP guy with that 93 mph sinker. I just don't think it's going to fool hitters very long once they see it a few times in a game. The inability to strike guys out will mean he's going to labor once the league sees him a few times.

I disagree with other posters here, Gibson had better secondary stuff when he debuted IMO.
