Twins #2 on their list after these trades.

Minnesota didn't pick up any elite-level players, but it did add five new members to its Top 30, to go along with a few non-ranked players. The Twins had a solid farm system heading into the Deadline period, with some serious high-end talent at the top of the list. Right-hander Jorge Alcala, who came over from the Astros in the Ryan Pressly deal, is the best player they acquired, slotting in at No. 11. The Twins are under .500, but they aren't floundering in last place, with young talent in the big leagues and the upper levels. They brought in some guys with some upside, even if they are a little farther away, and can be patient in allowing them to develop.

Hopefully the FO will package some of the minor leaguer's this off season and fill the holes on the Twins. They will need a 2nd baseman, utility infielder and lots of bullpen help. Nick Gordon isn't anywhere close to to being ready for a call up and should prove that he can handle AAA for at least half the year next season. It would be great to bring back Escobar this offseason on a 3 to 4 year deal. The bullpen needs at least one big upgrade and there should be plenty of options this via FA this year.

Hopefully they won't waste any prospects attempting to fill a couple holes until they have nearly a complete TEAM that is really ready to challenge for a top slot in the league.

Honestly, we have too much pitching in the high minors right now (especially when you factor in the options game). I think shipping one of two of them away in favor of some above average ML pieces will make some sense.

They don't need to send away the farm, but they can deal from surplus to acquire pieces they need to compete.

I have a difficult time understanding this point of view. When I look at the Twins pitching roster, out of a normal 13 pitcher staff, I count Gibson, Berrios and Hildenberger. The rest I see as hopefuls, maybe's and place holders. So I see at least 10 spots that need filling with upgrades and dependables, plus just plain alot better's. Not ****ing the past couple years they have used from 25 to 35 pitchers per season.

When I look at the regulars and bench players I see more of the same.

I agree they could never keep that many on the 40 man roster, but if they couldn't make our 40 man roster how many could be traded for the roster upgrades we really need to challenge for titles.

I also don't see this as a championship team with just a few holes to fill, I see this roster as needing definite upgrades at 15 positions or so to become a championship team. We are never going to get there by signing free agents so they have to come from an over producing farm system.

My interpretation of surplus is having too much of something. When I look at this roster, I can't point to an area of the field where we have too much of smething.

I get where you're coming from, but they still have too much pitching on the 40 man right now. There's only so many spots at the ML level, and like it or not, guys like Odorizzi and Pineda are guaranteed them, even if they are potentially replaceable. The problem they have going into 2019 is that several players are out of options (May, Mejia) and several more are waiting for injuries (Romero, Slegers, Gonsalves, Littell, and Stewart). That's a surplus. Sure, other than Romero it may not be top shelf talent, but it still has value now and takes up too many of those precious 40 man spots. Given that, it may make sense to ship away a couple of these minor leaguers for usable parts in the majors. That's all I'm getting at. The trick is identifying who stays and who goes.

Trouble is, most other teams have 40-man troubles too. I'm becoming convinced that a prospect loses a lot of his value once he becomes Rule-5 eligible - in part because if that's the case, he hasn't yet proved to be worth a 25-man roster spot and thus is pretty fungible but constricted.

Yeah, this is where things balance out. I really think they could ship off some of their AAA starting pitching and pick up a pretty good controlled 1B. Most teams make that trade in a second, especially if they have a few all bat types on the roster. Those happen to be in short supply on our 40 man at least for 2019.

You're significantly overestimating how much value those AAA guys have. Slegers and Stewart, basically none, Littell a little (hehe), Gonsalves a moderate amount . . . many teams have this sort of issue with borderline guys. It's not a "surplus" in any meaningful sense.

Maybe the Twins could include one of them as a 3rd prospect in a trade or something, but that's about it.

I am fully on board with this concept. However, I have 2 questions.

1) Should we be trading Romero or Gonsalves given the very short list of SPs signed past 2019?

2) Will Littell and/or Stewart return players that can fill the holes we are discussing?

Hopefully, they extend Gibson this winter. That would be very helpful to our 3-4 yr outlook.

BTW ... I believe we have reason to be optimistic even though there are several "holes".

  • Sano is looking quite a bit better. This had to be a humbling experience and chances are he will report to spring training in much better shape.
  • You have to believe resigning Escobar is very high on their priority list and you would have to think we can get him if we are willing to pay market rate.
  • 1B is one of the easier positions to fill.
  • May is looking pretty good so that would be a nice add to the BP.
  • We have significant available dollars via expiring contracts.
  • Garver is looking like he will fill one of lour holes pretty well.
  • Jake Cave looks like part of the solution.
  • Don't forget Polanco is back and looking pretty good too.

I think there is a good chance quite a few of our holes fill themselves over the remainder of this season. Let's not panic yet.

* While I am hoping, I hope last night was the start of Max Kepler being a big part of the solution. I am actually going to have a great time watching the remainder of the games if some of the question marks perform well, especially Sano / Buxton / Kepler Mejia, and Romero.
