Article: Twins Trade Lance Lynn to Yankees

Recommended Posts

Will Austin block Rooker???This is one of the problem I have with picking up other teams left-overs. They always get the benefit of being the new face and block the path of other prospects, till they suck bad enough. Looks like the F.O. is adding a bunch of dead wood.

Austin IS Rooker, if Rooker doesn't get his K rate down significantly.

Great opportunity to reuse some of my media!  This is Molitor right now, watching as the Aliens pick off his Marines one by one.  I'm picturing flatlines through Tom's pitcher usage graph later.

I am not anti-Molitor, but I think it would be really beneficial having Ripley on the coaching staff somewhere.  I am not sure she knows baseball, but she could put together a winning team.

While selling is probably the right thing, I can help but feel bad for the players who are left behind.  I am sure at some level they still had hopes of winning, and they are seeing their team get dismantled and basically having their bosses concede that they don't have what it takes and they still have two months left to play.

Tyler Austin - first guy that's been traded to the Twins that I've heard of before. He made news last year when both he and A. Judge both hit HRs during the same game, on their first MLB at bats: https://gothamsn.com/tyler-austin-is-proving-himself-e42b6713b265

He was a hot name there for a second, even had a cup of coffee with the Yanks this year and was DH'ing against lefties. Haters can poo-poo this all they want, but getting a guy who might be ready soon (and a grab-bag reliever to boot) for Lance Lynn?

Call me crazy but I like this one.

Edited to add: Austin also served a 4-game suspension for charging the mound in Fenway. He's got some fire, I like it even more now.

Instead of starting Mejia why don’t we use him as a middle reliever and bring up Gonsalves. If we are selling there is no reason not to get Gonsalves’ feet wet in the majors (more so than as a September call up). I mean he has 2 straight starts with few walks and a higher strike/B.B. splits, plus opponents still are hitting under .200 against him. If we are giving up we might as well see our highly touted prospects in AA and AAA here now.

Yeah I don't know. The FO is putting on a clinic at the deadline. I guess some people had their heart set on the twins competing this year and aren't taking it well?

I didnt take it well on Friday.  and i still think someone needs to make some Falvine I quit or I give up shirts.  We Falvine gave up in 2017 even though we won the Wild Card.  We gave up in 2018 and traded lots of player.  We got a head start on giving up in 2019 by trading one of our best relievers too.

but at this point i guess its about the race to the bottom.  Its too bad we had that run right before the all star break as now we really gotta tank to get a good draft slot next season.  We have lots of teams to pass on our way to the bottom.  Luckily giving up is way easier than actually trying and failing.

I like this trade. Tyler Austin might be either an adjustment or simply some more playing time away from being a dangerous power hitter. Right now, I think he can help this team as a guy who starts against lefties at the very least. Gotta find a taker on Morrison to make that happen.

Rijo does not throw hard, high 80s/low 90s from what I could find, but you can't live inside the zone like he does without knowing how to pitch. Maybe there's a mechanical measure that can be taken to get him pumping it up a little hotter, who knows?

And this was for two months of Lance Lynn. Not sure Austin ever establishes himself or Rijo can survive against more advanced hitters, but I'm surprised they could get this much, even with Lynn pitching better of late.

I do like this trade regardless though as i feel if Santana is good to go then Lynn or another starter (Odorizzi) should be dealt.  and that would not be considered giving up as we had extra starters ready to go.

TWINS PAY HALF OF LYNN'S SALARY FOR REST OF SEASON.

Is Austin as good, right now, as Logan Morrison? Is he a better choice to have as minor league depth, a bench bat than, say, Kennys Vargas?

We will find out in 2019.

Remember, who plays first if Mauer goes parttime and Sano fails. (Yes, Rooker is in the wings). Prtty much means we won't see Rooker this year, though.

I don't think he blocks Rooker at all...if anything he provides RH balance at DH

I could just be a pessimist but as of now I don’t even see how 2019 will be any better than this year. I mean it’s the feeling we will be worse on paper next year than we are this year. Of course a lot could (and should) change in the off season, but I feel it is harder to watch the team when on paper they look bad.

Also if we are selling why hasn’t anyone of note from the minors been called up? Sure we have seen Romero, and Littell briefly but that’s about it. If the Twins want to give hope going forward how about bringing up others like Gonsalves, Gordon, and LaMonte Wade to at least give the fan base some buzz.

IMO, there aren't a lot of reasons to be truly optimistic about our chances for 2019.

But if we see Gonsalves and Gordon take some lumps this year (like Romero and Littell have done) we could at least have some hope they will respond better in 2019.

IMO, Gordon got promoted a few times without deserving it and he's only been really good at one level (and he had to go back a second year for that).  I know he's been young for each level he's been at, but so has Kohl Stewart...

The best return of all the trades so far looks like the one for Pressly. A bit of stretch on value by Houston, IMO. Either that or we didn't know what we had.

Anyway, the Twins were clearly blown away enough to move Pressly. Doubt they move anyone else with team control for next year. The rest of these trades have just been to offload impending free agents and we got back about what I'd expect for all three.

Was just wondering the other day if there was a 1B/OF of at least decent defensive ability we could get before next season to back up those spots and DH. Austin is probably not that guy.

But you know...change of scenery...new hitting coach...still 26...who knows. Might get lucky.

Escobar hurt. Pressly only hurt a little but was surprising. Not sure I'm overly impressed by anyone brought in, though there is, at least, a little talent and depth to work with here within the system.

Except for Pressly, these are all 2 month rentals. Did anyone truly expect more than some fliers whee 1 or 2 might turn out?

The win is not a flier or two to turn out. The win is working toward 2019 and taking a longer look at what you have to contribute towards it. You can sign FA. You can make trades. But you can't take honest, long looks at your AAA prospects until you clear space and offer them an opportunity.

Seems unlikely, if Rooker is anywhere as good a hitter as we think. When Rooker is ready, he comes up. I'd even bring him up after the dust settles from all these trades, assuming Lo Mo is gone, and I don't see why not.

Luis Rijo – 18-years-old, RHP – The Yankees signed Rijo in 2015 and he has one year of DSL experience under his belt and is playing well in his first taste of the GCL. He has a 3.75 ERA and 49 K : 9 BB in 48 innings this season. He’s a low velocity guy, sitting in the high 80’s, low 90’s right now. He has good secondary pitches though and at his age should add some velocity as the years go on.  from http://bronxbaseballdaily.com/2017/09/whos-hot-on-the-farm-rookie-leagues/

Isn't Austin the a-hole who tried to take out Brock Holt at second and then blew his top when he got called on it? Maybe a clubhouse cancer ... Rookies charging the mound are more pre-madonna than fiery spirit.

Yeah, that Robin Ventura really didn’t pan out.
