Article: REPORT: Twins to Trade Eduardo Escobar to Arizona

Recommended Posts

this is a fair take. I prefer to think that, while they just lost depth, they have not yet thrown in the towel....as Adrianza (sp?) can play 3B until Sano returns.

I understand your frustration. I like that they sold high on a guy for a change.

Well, did they sell high? Or is it I don't know what people were expecting for a utility INF for 2 months of rent......

It's too bad you give up so easily on these players, I think a couple of them could be nice players.

We can talk about it when it happens, when they actually put up the numbers that Escobar is doing, in the show,  like in 5 years. Maybe I will be alive in 5 years.

Some others have already mentioned the possibility of the Twins singing Escobar as a free agent, but another thing to keep in mind is these new prospects could be flipped next year for pieces to help the big league club. Or at least their presence in the system could make it more ideal for the front office to trade away other pieces from the system.

So no, none of these guys specifically will help the 2019 Twins, but that doesn't mean they can't help next years team in a more indirect way.

THIS! Farm systems that are deep allow for more trades for Realmutoful impact players

Minor league players for guys that can and does well in the Big is always a gamble.  The Yanks trade their minor leagues for Big league talent all the time.  Do you want to win now or chance it for later.  I'm getting a little tired of waiting.  Sorry but the F.O. failed us this year.

The current yankees (purposely didn't capitalize) didn't build their team by trading their minors away.  It's been well documented that they've focused on homegrown talent in an attempt to emulate the 90's.  The Cubs took the homegrown approach a few years ago, and when their 1st wave was in MLB they decided that instead of trading for their perceived need (pitching) they actually traded a pitcher for Russell. The Astros and Redsox only started trading top prospects to supplement the team after they were confident the development and growth of the team was sustainable.  It hasn't even been 2 years since the Twins finished as literally the worst team in the entire league.  I don't think the FO has failed anybody for not selling low on the 2nd wave; trading Lewis, Arraez, Kiriloff, Graterol... last off season or even in the first part of this season would have been selling low on them and the FO would have been blasted that the returns would not have been enough to fix this year.

Now lets go sign Esco back this  off-season as a FA for a super ulitity role to a 2-3 year contract.

I totally agree that Esco has been a godsend for this team the past two years.  I also agree that if he would resign as a super-utility guy in the off season, that the Twins should do that in a heartbeat.

My feeling, however, is that Esco will not want to do that - especially after "starting" for the past year and a half.  He has proven he deserves a chance to start, so it was going to be (and will be) tough for the Twins to resign him IF (BIG IF) Sano bounces back to where the Twins need him to be.  If not, or if the Twins choose to not resign Mauer and move Sano to 1B, Then the door is open, IMO for and Escobar return.

Given all that, I like the trade.

Not overly impressed, they got a lot more for Nunez.  I would have taken quality over quantity.  Duran is the only guy I have any interest in that has any upside in my opinion.  Concern with him is he was signed in 2014 and is just getting his feet wet in A ball.  He looks like the type of guy we've seen a lot in the system that is eligible for rule 5 before ever reaching AA.  He'll more than likely make or break this trade.

Maciel looks to be a poor-man's Ben Revere.  A little dated, but Fangraphs had him as "little sparkplug" that "he often tries to slap and bunt his way on in lieu of taking actual swings".  He's 5-10 170, not a lot of projectability.  De La Trinidad is a low college draft pick doing well in the Midwest league.  The Twins are going after little fast guys, their algorithms must be predicting the return of the deadball era.

I will miss Escobar and his solid hitting, especially in clutch situations. Pretty crazy how he hit 20+ HRs last season for a guy of whom nobody thought he could hit. Long live the Eddie 400!

I don't quite understand the disappointment here. They're trading 2 months of Escobar for 3 lottery tickets - none of them look that great and I do wish we got one that was in the high minors, but Escobar as a rental wasn't going to get a boatload. I think some here raised their expectations too high with all of the projected trades and what-not.

Bit of perspective:  De La Trinidad was the Diamondback's 19th round draft pick last year (2017).  The Twins 1/1 overall pick of that draft just made it to Fort Myers.   Colton Burns, same age, also a LHH OF, who was drafted in the 18th round of 2017 by the Twins is at E-town (and not doing too hot...)

De La Trinidad is how old?

Lewis is how old?

The Twins were riding high on the heels of an impressive 2-1 win at Boston last night, but their playoff odds still sat at just 1.6 percent, per FanGraphs. They are seven games back of Cleveland, who recently took measures to build up its biggest weakness.

Not sure if this is fair. That's using Fangraphs projections, which have been pretty wrong on Cleveland so far. Weighting more to "season to date stats" gives us a 9.1% chance.

Point being the more prospects the better chance of hitting on more than if you have fewer (less depth)

But what does that have to do with trading for impact players like Realmuto? That costs an impact prospect like Lewis. This trade doesn't add an impact prospect like Lewis. Are we meaningfully more likely to deal Lewis after this trade? (I hope not.)

Just like we're dealing from Littell, Moya, and Watson now to help in 2018! Wait...

Maybe a Mejia type that was at least going to be MLB bound before 2022

I've never understood the perception that proximity to the majors increases value.  Mejia has a low ceiling and debatable floor.  Escobar isn't an established star that can garner elite prospects; he's a career utl man having a career year; the perfect player to trade for younger, projectable lottery tickets instead of a "possible" 5th starter from AA.  The best teams in the game have started seeing the building of an MLB team as a process, that process has it's foundation in minor league talent.  If you can't get 1 "elite" prospect in a trade, then I like going the young lottery ticket route for a player like Escobar.

the more prospects (depth) the better chance more of them will pan out and become usable pieces to allow trading top tier guys or themselves

I have no earthly way of predicting or knowing if a 19 year old short fast CF will turn into an All-Star Gold-Glover...but if there are 3 like that the chances are better one of them will be worth something in the future

Who know's...maybe Jhoan is Jeter's favorite 3rd cousin and he's the piece that lands Realmoto...or the next piece the Twins need

simple post...having more possible prospects increases the chance one of them turn out to be decent/good/great

If this was a popularity contest, I would hate seeing Eddie go. In fact I do anyway. He's a great personality, reliable player, and fun to watch. But as Mike said we finally sold high. Could we catch Cleveland? Maybe. What then? Butt kicked in a series, and FA fleeing? I hope the FO has higher goals, and a bigger picture than winning an extremely weak division one year. I would like to see something more sustainable for a change. Real competition for playing time.

I have no idea who these guys are or what they will become but if this guy from Brazil hits his ceiling of Inciarte. Maybe we can package him in a trade for Shelby Miller in the future.  :)

Impact players don't have to be Realmuto expensive.

I guess I will just have to pretend that Esocobar had a season ending injury, and is now out for the year, and then a free agent. Good luck to the new prospects, who enter a system that has reorganized to the tune of none of their top 3 levels can muster a winning record and establish a culture of winning.

I think the return was fair ... and I know that's how it goes ... it just makes me very, very sad. He was one of my favorites, and has been for years now, not just because of this season. And I think there are a lot of intangibles with him ... heart and soul lost. And my heart is broken. Just ... sad. :( But, yeah, that's how this game goes.
