How Tim Belcher Stole Christmas ~ Illustration by Jason Varitek

The Larnach

Should we be concerned with the lack of chatter on the Twins closing the deal with Trevor Larnach? With the holiday tomorrow and the deadline to sign being the 6th??

The way this season is progressing I can't help but wonder if this will be another Twins 1st round pick that won't sign

For those born in the 90's Belcher was drafted 1-1 in '83 and didn't sign with the Twins, neither did Varitek (1-21 in '93) or Travis Lee (1-2 in'96), in all 6 1st rounders have failed to sign with the Twins since 1965

Here's hoping Derek and the doMinions are exhausting all avenues for intervention this season and take heed of some sage advice from the good Doctor...

“But now," says the TwinsDailler, "now that you're here, the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear. UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”

Quick math from the TD Draft Pick Signing Page shows this

Twin's Bonus Pool: $5,930,000

Signed player total: $3,705,700

____________________________

Bonus $$$ Left: $2,224,300

Slot Value for Larnach: $3,120,000

Larnach discount  $895,700

Here's hoping there wasn't any change in thinking after the College World Series performance

Fallback option could be to throw that money at the 30th round selection :)

We can go over the pool by 5% without any future draft penalties too (we just have to pay a tax on it). So that could potentially mean $296,500 more.

They couldn’t sign him until the college World Series was over. That’s what the delay was.

And, btw, this thread is being moved to the Minor League forum. That’s where threads on Larnach and draft signees needs to go.

Couldn't sign, but free to negotiate, I think.

The WS has been over for a few days, we're closer to the deadline than we are the WS, and still no deal, I assume that is where the concern lies.

If it was just the formality of waiting until the WS was over, I assume he'd have signed right away. That makes me think they're still haggling.

Not freaking out yet, but a touch concerned.

In the Draft Signing Tracker article under Larnach’s name it says: “Signed For: Bonus is agreed to, amount not yet known.”

To me that implies that a deal is there just not finalized. But I don’t know what and where the hold up is. I don’t even know when the time to be concerned is. <shrug> Maybe Seth or Andrew can shed some light on this for us?

Concern that prompted the post is that that info was from prior to the CWS...wouldn't be the first time a young man (or his representation) had a change of heart or pocketbook

Sure. And I’m not trying to make light of anyone’s concern because it’s difficult when we don’t hear anything. The link I posted above was from a few days ago. Still doesn’t give the finality we want, but it does make it seem like signing Larnach is more or less a formality. We’ll just have to wait and see ... on pins and needles. :)

Just the start of good things to come :)
