Article: CHC 10, MIN 6: Hey, Remember Joe Mauer?

Recommended Posts

Joe Mauer had been struggling since coming off the DL but it was a different story Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Unfortunately, Jose Berrios had a similar role reversal. He went from pitching like an ace of his last several starts to pitching a dud on the North Side of Chicago.Snapshot (chart via FanGraphs)

Jose Berrios: 18 Game Score, 4.1 IP, 6 ER, 2 K, 4 BB, 56.4% strikes

Bullpen: 3.2 IP, 4 ER, 4 K, 2 BB

Lineup: 3-fro-12 w/RISP, 9LOB

Top three per WPA: Mauer .382, Garver .109, Rosario .052

Mauer entered today with just one home run and 13 RBIs on the year, but he got the Twins going in a big way early. He smacked a three-run oppo taco in the third inning, then a two-run double in the fourth. All five of those RBIs came with two outs.

Joe’s not the type of hitter who’s going to carry an offense for an extended stretch, but if he can be a consistent threat it’s going to go a long way toward helping the Eds. What about the rest of the game? Uh …

Berrios wasn’t looking like himself, but he managed to get into the fifth inning with a 5-2 lead. He retired the first batter in the inning, but then gave up a single, hit a batter and followed that up with another hit to load the bases.

Garvin Alston went out, and I’m guessing he specifically told Jose “don’t give up a grand slam.” I think that’s how those visits usually go. Anyway, Berrios didn’t listen, and Addison Russell hit a grand slam on the very next pitch to put the Cubs up for good.

Matt Magill gave up a two-run homer to Ben Zobrist in the sixth, then a solo shot to Kyle Schwarber in the seventh. Matt Belisle gave up a run in the eighth. That’s eight earned runs for Belisle in six innings pitched for the Twins this year.

Maued ended up with three hits, adding a single in the ninth. Both Mitch Garver and Eddie Rosario collected two hits and walked.

In case you missed it, the Twins DFA’d Felix Jorge to add Willians Astudillo to the 40-man roster because Taylor Motter had to go on the DL. Astudillo did not play today, but he was in the on-deck circle ready to hit for Berrios right before that disastrous fifth inning, ironically enough.

Berrios had a bad day, Magill and Belisle pitched to their talent level - so we DFA Jorge and not Belisle.  Please explain. So can someone pick up our number 20 prospect and put him on their list of prospects?  If so I would wonder what the Twins were thinking, but then I forget the FO has a plan and is smarter than all the rest of us.  I am so excited.

Didn't watch or listen to the game, but it obviously stunk. Why is it when the offense breaks out the pitching breaks down? I wouldn't dare blast Berrios for having an off day. But what about Joe? WOW! Did he just break out? Man I hope so! An actual presence at the top of the order really helps.

I loved just about everything the FO did in 2017, (including some roster juggling), the draft, this past off season, and have some optimism for the draft this season, but they have made some moves this season that just leave me dumfouned! And I'm not talking Romero. They were surprisingly quick to promote him, give him a real opportunity, and his demotion is logical from the standpoint of the roster management game. But Belisle??? Not Slegers, Duffey, Reed, Curtiss, or any number of arms needing an opportunity. And now they DFA Jorge after he is finally back and beginning his rehab? The guy has decent potential as a back end starter or possible swing man.

I need to find a wall to bang my head against.

Thanks for the game recap.  Couple of thoughts as I was at the game:

1. Saw Patrick Reusse at Murphy's bar before the game.  He was walking around and saying hello to all the Twins fans.  He was fun to speak with. His shirt was soaked with sweat...

2. It was so hot today at the game I think I lost 25 pounds in water weight.  Maybe had 10 beers and never had to visit the restroom (I know TMI).

3. Sat behind home plate and it looked like the Ump had a hard time finding the strike zone (including Jose).

4.  We lost and we still had a great time at Wrigley.  The Cub fans are nice people.

Best regards,

Today was a first in my life-turned off the TV with my favorite player pitching and a 3 run lead. Saw the hand-writing on the wall, and even worse, wasn’t even pissed when Jose gave up the grand slam. Something about this team is off..........

Escobar is reverting to the mean. He’s been slumping the last week or so.

Anyone who thought he was going to be a 150 OPS + guy was likely a little optimistic.

He hasn't been the same since he was hit by Porcello. It's so important to protect your players.

l cant wrap my head around this. Why?

Unless...they're trolling us!

The only thing I can think of is maybe they'll be able to get something for Belisle at the trade deadline. This team as packed it in and get ready for the garage sale. What's the price tag for a Dozier? Hey, is that an Escobar in the corner and is the price negotiable? Anyone need a Rodney... he's slightly used but is in good enough shape for a few months.

If anything, Belisle would be a guy to eat the innings that Duke/Rodney would get after they get traded... he has zero trade value and it would take a huge turnaround for him to be worth anything. This guy couldn't get a major league deal after what he did last year, so if anybody wants him, they'll get him when he's DFA'd.

So we keep Belisle, but put Jorge on waivers. We send down Busenitz, who isn't the worst ERA on the staff and keep...Belisle.

We bring up a third catcher to do what, play the infield?,Heck, bring up Zack Granite and let him play centerfield until you decide to bring back Buxton. See what Granite can do.

Jorge may have fallen behind in the possible rotation arms, but he still is better than (name your player currently on the roster).

Somethings aren't making sense here in Twins land.

Maybe the Cubs will think Joe Mauer is invincible at Wrigley and make a play for his bat to get them to the playoffs. Would Joe go to Chicago with a chance for the post season? A way to end a career, perhaps? Let's showcase Joe more the next two games!

Keeping Belisle because of a trade or two still doesn't make sense. Why not give guys like Buzenitz, Duffey, Curtis, etc, some run?

I can't think of a scenario in which it makes sense to keep Belisle. Maybe if there were a reliever conference in Vegas, Belisle couldn't attend because he was sick, and the conference got struck by a meteor leaving him the only reliever left on earth.

After giving up 3 and 4 ERs respectively to Bos and TX, Belisle has only allowed 1 run in his last two innings pitched. He's clearly started to turn things around. Idk why everybody is bitching about sending out the younger, more talented Busenitiz or DFA'ing Jorge to keep Belisle's veteran presence around.....

God bless Joe F. Mauer.  According to LEN3, he says he had to play because his mom was at the game.

Here's hoping child #3 is a boy, so he can get drafted by the Twins and hit some guilt dingers for grandma.

Grossman batting AND in the field...... oh be still by beating heart!!!!!

If only they had him back in the lead off position, we would have had the trifecta!

There is always tomorrow though, because with Grossman apparently, there will always be a tomorrow

Now that's the kind of wry, pathos-laced ironic wit best remembered from the darkest end days of the Ryan/Gardy era.

Kirby, let's just say the plain truth hurts so good. And here, we thought the days and months of head-scratching fringiest of veteran personnel moves were a thing of the past.

I've said it dozens of times before... A guy on a $184M contract should be able to afford a PR spokesperson.

Come on everyone, it is clear Falvine have a plan.  Let me help outline it.  They sent down BOOOOZE-nitz because he, uh, ummm.

Well wait it is clear they want to keep Belisle because of his veteran value in situations of, um, uhhhh.  Well Belisle, he, umm, I mean, there must be.............never mind.  I got nuthin'.

Maybe he has blackmail pictures of the FO????

Many of us noted that his mean reversion was inevitable. Just look at his career progression for all the evidence you need... hot stretches at the plate interspersed with longer stretches of mediocrity. He's a great guy to have in the extended utility role and the clubhouse, it's unfair to ask him to be Manny Machado. Edited by jokin
