Article: CWS 6, MIN 1: Gibby Gets Got

Recommended Posts

Twins Daily Contributor

Since May 18th, a span of six starts, no opposing team had scored more than three earned runs off Kyle Gibson, and five of those games were of the quality start variety. That changed on the south side of Chicago on Wednesday as the White Sox racked up eleven hits and a 5-0 lead when his night was done.Snapshot (chart via FanGraphs)

Kyle Gibson: 44 Game Score, 7 IP, 5 ER, 7 K, 1 BB, 63.7% strikes

Bullpen: 1 IP, ER, 2 K

Lineup: 2-for-6 w/RISP, 8 LOB

Bottom three per WPA: Gibson -.170, Wilson -.140, Kepler/Mauer -.070

Gibson did end up finishing seven innings and struck out seven, but whenever Chicago needed a big hit, they seemed to get it. Among the twelve baserunners he surrendered, only five were left on base and the White Sox were 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position against him.

On the mound opposite him for the Sox was James Shields, and he looked like the younger version of himself against a hapless Twins lineup. He got thirteen outs on ground balls, struck out five, and had three one-two-three innings among his seven frames.

In the sixth inning, it was a “what the heck just happened?!” moment when it comes to umpires, and the Twins were on the wrong side of it. Third base coach Gene Glynn was mysteriously ejected (nice video, by the way, MLB…) after a Brian Dozier single put Eddie Rosario 90 feet away from home. A balk was then called that should have given Minnesota a run, but the White Sox protested and somehow that call was reversed. Paul Molitor then came out to object to that decision and also got tossed…

The weirdest part in all of that, is just like strikes, arguing a balk is not supposed to be allowed:

Not that it mattered much other than it would have kept the Twins from being shut out to that point, but I can’t wait to hear any explanations from Major League Baseball.

Out of the bullpen, Ryan Pressly gave up a home run to Avisail Garcia in the eighth inning and his ERA on the season has now increased by two full runs in the month of June to 4.14.

The only star of the game on offense for Minnesota was Ehire Adrianza, who went 4-for-4 with his 14th double, and finally got the Twins on the board officially in the top of ninth with an RBI single.

Go back at ‘em tomorrow, fellas…?

Gotta imagine the writing is now on the wall. This year isn't happening. I do expect the team to play better in the second half, but it's going to be too little, too late, as the Indians are beating up on the bad teams while the Twins are overlooking them.

Per FiveThirtyEight, The Twins have a 5% chance of winning the AL Central. They have a 1% chance of making a Wild Card. They have also just dropped series to Texas and Chicago. If that isn't the writing on the wall, I don't know what is.

It is crazy to think that the Twins were supposed to be an offensive Juggernaut. Their offense ranks #23!!!! of 30 teams. Losing your shortstop for 80 games, having to send your All-Star to Single-A, losing the only competent center fielder for most of the year thus far, and getting nothing from Logan Morrison & the Catcher position is just too much to overcome for 2 guys.

The offense will heat up in the second half. Unfortunately, barring a total collapse on the part of the Indians, it's going to be too little, too late.

On a separate note:

How long can you go with Matt Belisle? A reliever almost HAS to come off the 25-man when Mejia is added on Saturday. Mathematically and realistically speaking, it has to be either Belisle or Busenitz. Matt Magill is another option, but he has to be at the bottom of that list, given his mere competency thus far.

I hate to send Busenitz down, as he needs his innings to develop further at this level. But Belisle can't go without losing him completely, and Falvine likes him.

Perhaps the next two days will dictate that, given what the circumstances are on Friday afternoon.

Gibson has gone over 100 pitches now, 4 games in a row. 118, 103, 105, and 113 this game. And the two before that, 101 and 99. For the last 7 games, even with last night, he is an unsupported 1-4 with a 2.96 ERA, 45.2 innings, only given up 39 hits, with 14 walks, 38 Ks, and a 1.16 WHIP. That is a work horse of a pitcher. I hope it doesn't wear him out.

The Twins could fire Molitor just to show fans that ownership/management even gives a rat's behind, win enough games pre all-star to keep .500 on the radar. come back post all-star with Sano, Buxton and Polanco back in the lineup, and the team being told by the new manager to produce or else.

Or.....they could do what they will do which is absolutely nothing saying "Wait 'til 2021 boy".

and we are still in second,,,,for now.  So,  I'll layoff all the negative talk, I've about given up on this year. Now the F.O. has to start making decisions about guys like Kepler,Garver,Dozier,Buxton,Sano.  Do we stick with these guys or start the trading.  I'm for sticking it out and bringing up Gordon and some of those pitchers.  I'd still like to see Vargas just one more time too.  By the end of July, we'll know where this team is headed and we can DFA or Trade a lot of dead weight, get younger and go for Sept.

Nah, lay on the negative talk. Saying we are in second is like saying we are in second driving a ford pinto and the leader is driving a formula one car. The only reason we are in second is because the 3 behind us are on bicycles and there is a chance our pinto blows up and we end up in last anyways.

What a dumpster fire

Our free agent LH power hitter is on the bench against a righty.

And that's exactly where he should be, for the rest of the season! Logan Morrison was a bad signing. No two ways around it. The Twins are in terrible positions with so many players already (ie: Buxton, Sano)...they should cut dead weight with Morrison to lighten their workload. He's absolutely toxic at this point.

Only the MOY having a 9 man bullpen would use one of 4 guys that pitched yesterday in a game that was not winnable.

I’d like to hear a Molitor defender justify that move.

Ok. Molly apologist here and I think I can help you. Molly was ejected in the 6th inning and Pressly pitched the 8th inning.

Was he in the game at that point?

Belisle is a washed up veteran arm who lacks an option right? Yeah he'll stay.

The more things change the more they stay the same...

Yes, let’s pretend Molitor isn’t in his office watching the game relaying instructions.

How about a real answer?

No matter who sent Pressly out, it is a puzzler. Its obvious he's wearing down (already) and yet they run him out when you're down by 5 runs. Why not Reed, Magill, or Duke?
