Mike Pomeranz to be Padres' La Panta

News anchor Mike Pomeranz is leaving KARE-TV Channel 11 to become a broadcaster for the San Diego Padres, the station announced Monday.

 

Pomeranz anchored KARE's 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts since joining the station six years ago. He was a reporter and anchor at WCBS-TV in New York prior to coming to Minneapolis.

"KARE 11 has been great for my family and me these last six years," Pomeranz said in a statement. "It took the opportunity of a lifetime to pull me away."

Pomeranz is no stranger to sports. He was a pitcher in the Minnesota Twins minor league system before a shoulder injury ended his baseball career. He also has done some work for Fox Sports North while in the Twin Cities.

 

 

According to the North County Times he will be the pregame and postgame host on the Padres' broadcasts.

The Padres don't have a TV home yet, but they do have a new face for pre- and post-game shows.

 

John Remes, general manager at KARE 11 in Minnesota, announced Monday that long-time news anchor Mike Pomeranz is leaving the station.

Pomeranz is set to join Fox for its coverage of Padres.

Officially there has been no announcement of a network, but Fox has already hired Henry Ford as Fox Sports San Diego's general manager. Ford has in turn hired network and Padres game producers.

And now Pomeranz is on board.

Pomeranz, 45, was a left-handed pitcher at Clemson.

He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and was 9-18 with a 4.72 ERA in 88 career games before shoulder problems force him to retire in 1992.

He has a journalism degree from Arizona State and has worked as a news reporter in Chicago, Knoxville, Colorado Springs and New York before joining KARE, where he anchored the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts at the NBC affiliates.

I saw this a couple of days ago. I liked watching him on KARE 11 because he did have a passion for baseball. Last year when he went to Japan and did the series on Nishioka, it was fun to see some insights into the player the Twins were bringing to their organization. It sounds like he wanted some more time with his family and only working during the baseball season should free him up a little.
