If they're going to go after someone it had better be someone who's better than Garver. If you're going to go through the effort to make a move, it had better be Realmuto as the catcher of the future. Otherwise we're just getting a platoon guy to give Garver days off. And that in my opinion is a waste.

I think they should definitely try to find a guy they can rotate Garver with. I'd much rather have Wilson in AAA as the 3rd catcher, but I don't think a trade is coming anytime soon. Maybe in June?

Remember, this is Miami we're talking about.

That perception is not true. They got real value back in the Yelich and Ozuna trades. Stanton was a salary dump but they could have received much more if they were willing to pony up a penny on their end of the Stanton contract.

It's not like they're giving away players for free.

I'd be interested in Realmuto but might say no after seeing the demands. I'm Ok with Garver getting a shot every day; as much flack as he's gotten for his defense, the pitchers have been better since he's taken over. He might not be the reason for the turn around, but thus far any deficiencies haven't appeared to be a significant factor.

If not Realmuto and if the team absolutely has to have a known commodity, maybe Wellington Castillo? Surely the White Sox are ready to sell.

Realmuto would be #1 on any list but it won't happen. Dodgers have some depth there and suck this year. But realistically, there aren't that many good catchers. Garver has been ok (100 OPS+) and isn't Ryan Doumit behind the plate.

I'd like to upgrade Wilson for sure - we have a thread already on Swihart - but I'm not sure we'll get a catcher better than Garver.

IIRC there are two losses already directly contributed to by Garver's defense.

I don't think he's any kind of every day answer, and obviously Bobby Wilson is a stopgap at best.

Swihart from Boston would be a good backup C. It's time to see if Garver can handle the job full-time.

Realmuto is going to be expensive....

Quick SWAG:

Realmuto is a 3-WAR player with two more years of arbitration left. That's something like $50M of surplus value. Given what is estimated about prospect valuations, that is probably worth a prospect in the #15-#30 range overall in baseball.

Gonsalves or Gaterol and kiriloff.... And Garver. Expensive for sure....

Agreed. It may be worth giving up Gordon + others for Realmuto. I'm not ready to do that until Garver shows he's clearly not a starting caliber player.

Realmuto is a top 5 C in baseball. That's valuable no doubt. After the top 5 there's not much difference between #6 and #26 on the list.

Yep. Lewis is off the table but they'd probably ask for a package with Gordon and Gonsalves as an opening offer. Maybe we get it moved a bit but Realmuto will hurt us prospect-wise.

Additionally, his next two arb years will be expensive. He's making 2.9 this year and probably makes something like 14-17m over his final two arb years. Pohlads don't like to spend money.

I think Realmuto is a real option now. I'd see if a small package revolving around Littell gets it done.

This is laughable. Littell will not headline a trade, Realmuto would cost significant prospects.

When Lucroy was traded in August 2016 with 1.5 years left on his contract at age 30, he cost the Rangers Baseball America's #16 prospect and #64 prospect (though the Rangers got a decent reliever as well).

Realmuto is 27 and has 2.5 years of control left. He would likely cost you multiple top prospects - think Gordon and Gonsalves plus something else worthwhile.

WAY to expensive when the Twins have Garver and Castro for next year. They should be looking at one-year options. Lucroy would be the class of that crew but the A's will wait til closer to the deadline unless you blow them away.

Why is that too expensive? They have what at catcher? Castro isn't stellar, and now he'll be older and coming off a season ending injury. What is the point of a deep system if you won't trade from it? Realmuto is an answer for this season and two more. And, I am a Garver fan.....

Gotta upgrade asap. Priority #1 as of a few hours ago.

The rotation is solid with reinforcements available. The bullpen less so but you can hope for the best with Jay and a few others filling in roles.

But Garver shouldn’t be the full-time starter and Wilson is an afterthought, a guy you don’t mind giving 10-15 starts due to injury but not 30-40.

I don't know what the heck you're talking about, the Twins can afford Realmuto's 2019-2020 salaries that will total $14-17M and the Pohlads aren't getting in the way of that. Clearly they must have hated how Falvey and Levine spent $30M in 2018 in free agency.

The only thing preventing a trade for Realmuto is the prospects the Marlins will ask for. Someone had mentioned Nick Gordon, but I think I'd rather keep him because our infield's future looks very muddied with Dozier and Escobar as free agents.
