Castro to DL; Bobby Wilson recalled

Castro messed his knee up. Not sure how long he is out for. Finally time for some Garv sauce.

Wilson has an OPS of .332 in 40 AB's...don't expect a lot of production at the plate from him. Personally would have liked to see Willians Astudillo.

I've been really curious what Garver could do as the everyday catcher, I guess we now get to find out. The scary part of the situation is the complete lack of catching prospects above low A.

Even those in low A are very big question marks at this point.

Well that sucks.....

Wonder if it was on that slide at home plate.

Was he on base? HA HA! Oh yeah, he got thrown out by a mile. Wonder why he bothered to slide. No big loss..... Bring back Drew Butera or John Ryan Murphy. Better yet, Kurt Suzuki.

ugh..like we need more excuses why this team is not preforming anywhere near expectations.....Hopefully Garver  playing fulltime can upgrade what the team has been getting from the catcher position offensively.  Defense and pitch framing...IDK....

Castro's bum knee had been giving him trouble last week, if you recall he sat out a few games with that injury. Last night's slide probably aggravated the injury, etc.

Well Garver, now's your chance to take that starting job. How about some defense tonight, kid!

To make room Erv put on 60 day

Saw that. What does this mean? Reading between the lines does it mean a longer delay for Erv? What are we looking at for a return date and has that changed?

it means they didn’t really have a reason to 60 day him earlier. He just started throwing a couple weeks ago, so he wasn’t coming back until Memorial anyways. Now I think he has to be out until 60 days after the season started. Roughly May 28.

The Twins seem to enjoy putting players in the lineup that are automatic outs. Hence no A-stud, but yes to no bat Wilson. More dark hole at the end of the lineup.

this is exactly why they signed Wilson. If you are a Garver fan, nothing could be more encouraging than this scenario.

They signed Wilson to not get hits? To be an automatic out? Sure, glove first, but I don't believe that they signed him to not hit (worse than ever this year, and in AAA)! Not for a heartbeat. I like hits in every position, and the higher possibility of them. I don't subscribe to short stops, center fielders, and catchers don't need to hit. To take that as normalized and OK is one of the problems with team constructions all over the league. I am a Garver fan because he is on the Twins. If he wasn't, for what he has offered so far, I certainly wouldn't be. To settle for no bat is to dwell in mediocrity.

Garver may, or may not hit. He will likely hit better than Castro though. But I think by the end of the ten day (?) DL we will be sorely missing Castros defense. And I am not even that big a fan of Castros defense to start out with. :(

I would have preferred Willians Astudillo, but I guess they want Wilson's proven mit behind the plate. Problem is he's almost guaranteed to be a black hole in the lineup, but Castro was already that.

If you would have told me that Ryan LaMarre, Gregorio Petit, Matt Magill, and Bobby Wilson were all on the roster on May 5th, I probably wouldn't have believed you... though maybe I would have because it seems like these scenarios happen year after year here.

Every team in baseball would like to have guys at C, SS, and CF that can hit.

Unfortunately, there aren't enough that can to go around.

A) catchers don’t hit. Mauer, Pudge, Berra, were extraordinary. They need to be valued as such.

B)Castro is a league average hitting catcher. Nothing wrong with that.

C) how good of a catcher can you reasonably expect to be stashed at AAA? We’re talking about the 27 year old career minor league backup and the 35 year old journeyman at the end of his leash. I’m just thrilled they’re both seemingly competent and we’re not watching Kurt Suzuki.

Suzuki and Castro have identical career OPS. Haven't you been critical of Castro's bat?

I am not that interested in career stats, especially for this discussion. Career stats won't make Pujols worth his salary, for example. Now is all there is. History is fun, notable, sometimes remarkable, but over. Career stats don't help a team this year. This year's stats, do.

I haven't been outspoken about Castro, but I have never been enamored. Not at the signing, not with his creating wild pitches and passed balls out of pitches that a catcher should stop or catch or block. I was pleasantly surprised that he hit some last year. But this discussion is about who is taking his place, not Castro.

Well by that token Wilson's milb stats aren't hurting the Twins either.

He's as capable as any baseball player of going on a fluky, unsustainable hot streak at the plate.

So if we're only allowed to judge each player based on their current snapshot at the mlb level, then why are you ripping Wilson's bat?
