Article: Game Thread: Twins @ White Sox, 5/3 - 7:10pm CT

Recommended Posts

Tonight starts the 2nd attempt at a 4-game series with the White Sox, this time in Chicago. It is the 2nd attempt because the 1st attempt didn’t turn out so well. An April snowstorm blew through southern Minnesota and caused the cancellation of 3 of those 4 games.

I am Mr. Post Hoc Ergo Proptor Hoc (latin: after this, therefore because of this). I’m not going to stand here and say definitively that the snowstorm absolutely ruined everything. However… I am going to stand here and suggest it. The Twins were 6-4, coming off a series win against the fairly talented Houston Astros. The White Sox were struggling, young and not playing very good baseball. The series had 4-game sweep written all over it which would have put the Twins at 10-4 and a lot steadier going into Puerto Rico, Tampa and the Bronx. Instead… the last 3 games of the series were cancelled. The Twins got 4 days off before heading to the Island to face the Indians and you have all been living or dying with the rest. Since the snowstorm, the Twins have been 3-12.

Go ahead and try to explain things with launch angles, spin rate, zone ratings and stuff. It was the snowstorm that caused it all.

I am Mr. Post Hoc Ergo Proptor Hoc… at least that is what the ladies call me.

Here are some things to think about:

1. Top Non-Trump News Story (Or Stories):

The FDA has issued a warning about potentially contaminated oysters from Canada. Americans have become ill after slurping down these raw oysters. Each of the oysters are confirmed members of a fringe terrorist group that injected themselves with norovirus. According to the up-to-date statistics, the outbreak sickened around 100 in California, 172 in British Columbia, and caused around 20 hand injuries when that commonly used tool slipped from the oyster and impaled the hand of the shucker.

2. Our Twins:

I just want to focus on Fernando Romero. I didn’t get to see him pitch because I was at work but I’ve seen some highlights, I’ve read some reports and I’ve imagined some things in my mind. Fernando had a fantastic MLB Debut and it looks like he has some real good stuff and it is fresh… with that new car smell. I’m like everyone else; I dream of a bright future but we may want to wait a little bit before we cut Lance Lynn.

3. The White Sox:

Things haven’t been going that well with the White Sox but that doesn’t mean that things haven’t been going as expected. They are young… they are not there yet, but… take a look at the Braves and Phillies this year, consider the World Series wins by the Astros and Cubs after a massive youth movement, and it is hard to argue against the approach. Then take a look at the performance of older free agent signings and it starts to sink in… my possibility of a major league career in baseball at age 52 is diminishing real hard every single time a team goes younger successfully.

4. Today’s Joe M Conversation:

Mauer: All right, guys… I need a hand. My wife has a list of things I need to get done. I was thinking you could all help me out to get them done quicker.

Montana: Umm… I don’t think this is a good idea, Joe.

Mauer: Seriously… it won’t take long… if we all take one chore off her honey-do list, we will be done in no time flat.

McCarthy: Let me see that list… 1. Take out the trash.

Maddon: I’m on it.

McCarthy: 2. Unload dishwasher

Morgan: That’s mine.

McCarthy: 3. Water all the plants.

Mauer: I’ll do that… I know how to talk to them. I'm their quiet leader.

McCarthy: 4. Wash the car.

Montana: You want that one, McCarthy?

McCarthy: My job is to read the list. You are the only one left.

Montana: Seriously… I’m getting ripped off… the other 3 jobs are much easier. What’s the last one?

McCarthy: It says… 5. Love me forever!

Everybody: MINE!!!

5. Nap-Time:

I was talking with my nephew last night. He has a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old and he was telling me how much he appreciated naptime. I told him I completely understand… it’s like the eye of a hurricane.

Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc is generally considered a logical fallacy.    If B happens after A then A may or may not have caused B.    I suspected you were right though so I did more testing.

I found out that Romero wasn't with the team after the last snow storm.  We did not have a snow storm before yesterday's game.  We won.   Testing complete.  You do the easy work of spinning your fancy theories and leave it me to do the hard work of proving it.

Speaking of phallicy you may have been too subtle with your best line about the ladies so let me spell it out for those that scanned past it.

Ladies "I was with Riverbrian and now I have condition X.  Therefore Riverbrian caused condition X."

Thanks, rain.

Tonight's game is the one from this series that I know I can watch.

Oh, you're going to dump on Cedar Rapids tonight too.  Thanks again.

I have seats behind home plate for Friday at Cedar Rapids.  It was supposed to be Graterol.  Now it will probably be Ober getting pushed into Friday (nothing against Ober, but I was looking forward to the 100mph glove pop).

That's the ticket!

I would love to see what people think here should Molitor suicide squeeze Mauer in from third in the 9th of a tie game tonight...

I think Molitor is the only one that could do it properly but I don't think he is on the active roster.

However the snowstorm caused an adjustment to the pitching rotation therefore the rotation gets out of whack which causes the call up of Romero who then wins the game and influences the record of 3-12 since the snow storm.

Mr. Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc strikes again.

As for the ladies... i never know what they mean when they call me Mr. Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc... I also never know what they mean when they ask if they look Ok. They seem to speak in code.

Little notes from MLB network:

The Twins bullpen has given up a .850 OPS, worst in baseball.

For those worried about the Twins start, they have 56 game left vs White Sox, Tigers and Royals.

I haven't started worrying yet but if you allow me a little time... I might.

I may be wrong but I think it's the other way around. No away games and part time doing home games

Well, last season he didn't do any home games, so maybe that changed again for this season.

Edit: Yep ... he's only doing Sunday day games at home. That's it. I know the previous season (or two) he was off home games because he'd drive back and forth to his home somewhere in Indiana between games, and that was too much for him, so he was in the booth for away games. But this year ... home games, only on Sunday afternoons. I think it said he's only doing 20 games this year, so far reduced from past seasons.
