If the game is "too close to over" for a bunt, it's too close to over for a shift.  If you shift, you get what you asked for.  Twins are spoiling an amazing effort with whining.

This, in my opinion is the overlying factor.  Also some of baseballs unwritten rules are tiring.

Bottom line is our starting pitching was great and at least right now Baltimore is a bad bad hitting team

Good to see TD not buying into the "play the game the way people in 1890 wanted" B.S. I'd get it if it was the Twins doing it up 7-0 but when you're down and there's no no-hitter on the line and there's a shift on, it becomes ridiculous to complain.

Agreed it seems like a media/Molitor thing.

If you are down by 7 runs in the 9th inning... You don't need a home run... you need 6 base runners before you need that home run.

If the Twins were stupid enough to give them a base runner via bunt by shifting.

The Twins got what they deserved.

Why are some ... upset, I guess ... over the 9th inning bunt? With a shift on, what are you going to do? Why put a shift on in the 9th anyway?

Exactly.    If you don't want people to bunt to beat the shift in a 7-0 game.    Don't shift in a 7-0 game.    If these unwritten rules apply to everyone, shouldn't the O's be upset that Buxton stole 2nd in a 6-0 game?    Granted, the game was far from in hand when he did it, but still.

I'm more upset that this discussion seems to be taking away from the absolutely fantastic performance Berrios had.

I read this post last night and was not sure what you meant about being upset.  I know Dick reacted, but Bert quickly responded saying it was a good play by Cisco.  I figured that was what you meant.  I come to find out today that at least Dozier and Berrios spoke out against the play.  I personally don't see the problem.  IF they were up 7 runs in the bottom of the 8th and did that I could see it.  Even then, though.....

I can give Berrios a pass since he was pitching a shutout, he is young, etc.  Dozier commenting on it the way he did doesn't come off well, in my opinion.  He said:

"I could’ve said something at 2nd base but they have tremendous veteran leadership over there."

From the Orioles perspective, what exactly are they supposed to do?  Stop trying to win??  It's not like they were piling on.  If facing a similar situation the Orioles faced yesterday, I sure hope this team doesn't decide...."Well, we are down 7 runs, let's pack it in.  Gotta respect the game"

I don't get it.  Oh well

Great outing by Berrios.  I am GLAD my family did a get together Saturday instead of Sunday because I was able to watch this game without interruption.  This makes up for missing that gem he pitched last May in Cleveland!

I wasn't crazy about the decision to send Berrios back out for the 9th. I know his pitch count was low, but it's also the first start of the season.

I was not concerned at all because he had a very low pitch count.  He was underneath 90 pitches going into the 9th inning.

Media maybe, not much a Molitor thing so far as I can see.  Rosario, Berrios, and Dozier have all commented publicly about not liking it.

I was happy to see Bert immediately step in to squash the complaint-fest Bremer was ramping up.  It's rare to see Bert on the well-reasoned side of an unwritten rules issue.

Looking at those two clips of Berrios, especially the second one, you have to wonder what the heck you’re supposed to do with a pitch like that??!? So nasty! Great start to the season for he hometown nine!

love that curve ball

If my wife ever leaves me I would be interested in taking Berrios' curveball out for a nice steak dinner, a quiet evening stroll across the Stone Arch Bridge and then, I don't know, just kind of see where it goes from there.

I'm loving all these takes on Buntgate!
We play the Orioles again in early July. I'll be very disappointed if we drill Sisco in his first at bat. However, given Dozier and the team's post-game comments, I wouldn't be surprised if that happens.

many years ago, I did that with Johan Santana's changeup, but pitches always cheat man. It's not worth it ;-)

So Buxton's running catch in the 8th, that looked seemingly easy since he caught it shoulder length while charging in, was a 5 star catch according to statcast. He covered 92 feet in 4.8 seconds. That hit ball only gets caught 21% of the time.

Had me fooled too.  Shows how elite his speed and break abilitiy are.

Anyone have the catch probability data on the Sisco double that turned Rosario around? I'm lost finding it on Baseball Savant.

Wow. And he made that look fairly routine.

Absolutely valid concern. I wanted to see him get the complete game shutout, but as we saw, it got a little chaotic and the Twins were a batter or two away from losing control and making a pitching change anyway.

The whole bunt thing is disappointing to me.

Berrios is one of my favorite players. Has been since A ball.

But this shows you never really know any of these guys.

Lost a lot of respect for these three clowns.

That's pretty harsh and calling them clowns seems to border on wrong side of the comment policy stipulation regarding personal attacks. I think this post would have been just as valid without the unnecessary barb and certainly less inviting of a rebuttal personal attack.

I'm with you.

The one I really don't get is Dozier. Berrios was the pitcher, and maybe they really were challenging the hit ruling on his double last time up, so as dumb as it is he is going to take it more personally. Rosario, I'm guessing is more friendly with berrios being country mates, and both are young and whatever. Still dumb to be upset about it. But what is dozier on about? Being one of the vets on the twins, does he tell young guy, like rosario who did like the exact same thing, not to play to win? His quote was the most confusing.
