Cubs keep faith in Yu Darvish after a disappointing debut!

Hmmmm!!!!!!!!!! 126 million over 6 years. Threw atleast 100 pitches without getting out of the 5th inning for only the second time in his career. Against the Marlins mind you. 4.1 innings 5 runs 5 hits 2 walks 2 hit batters. I know I know this is only 1 game but something interesting to compare to our 2 additions Odorizzi and Lynn. Twins couldnt afford to have Darvish contract blow up in their face for 6 years.

You're asking for massive over reactions after every Darvish start with this thread.

No what Im doing is comparing our signings with Darvich. IMO the Twins couldnt afford a bad Darvish contract so again IMO it is worth following.

You're saying it's a bad contract 1 start into a 6 year agreement. You can continue to track this story. I'm not participating after this post.

Come on guys ... just talk about the Cubs and the Darvish contract without attacking one poster for how he stated it. Read past that and comment on the topic, not the poster.

That said, this is Chicago ... and it could go two ways ... Cubs fans will either be in panic mode and full of angst or they'll say 'We'll get them next time' after every bad start. Nothing in between ... doom and gloom or rainbows and sunshine.

But, it's Darvish ... I'll give him a few more starts. Part of me wants him to fail, but then I don't really like to put that out there like that, either. Karma and all.

I expected those who supported the Darvish signing to be vocal! If his first outing was like Odorizzi, we would we seeing their positive posts for him instead. If after 10 starts he is tearing it up then good for him. I will still compare his starts to our signings nothing more and nothing less. Guess I could have waited for 3,5,7,10 starts.

I certainly wouldn't have posted anything about 1 start, even if it was a 20k no hitter.

1 start is too small of sample size to mean anything whatsoever.

Even 10 starts is far too small of a sample size.

Starting pitchers need to be evaluated over a couple hundred innings at a time.

Thank you for your views. 200 innings is fair however sometimes durability issues make it a 2 or 3 year time period before that number is reached.

Just as we both add up the wins for the Twins this year I also will be comparing Darvish and our additions 1 start at a time and at the end of the season we can compare numbers.

Hopefully everone stays healthy so the comparison is over 1 season in your 200 inning time period.

Moderator's note: Following up on Carole's warning... I've had to remove a couple of posts that contributed nothing to the thread but snark. If you disagree with someone's take, find a way to legitimately rebut it, or just move on.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a thread about Darvish. We added one about De Leon. My guess is that Darvish will rebound after his bad start but it's not impossible that Lynn or Ordoizzi have a better year than him.

Frankly, it's not a bad idea to keep track of guys that "got away" to remember how risky some of these contracts are and/or how realistic that player would have helped the Twins.

It's a fine thread topic by me as well.   I fully admit, I wanted the Twins to sign Darvish, but sometimes God has a way a giving us what we really need rather than what we think we want.

I wish Darvish well and hope he has a good healthy season and that the Twins meet the Cubs in the World Series where unfortunately he gets locked the bathroom for the whole set and the Cubs are unable to get him out in time to make a difference... (insert Harry Carry voice saying Twins Win!!! Twins Win!!! HOLY COW the Twins Win!!!).

I remember a certain Hicks thread very similar to this that was locked. Personally I don't think it should have been, but the theory behind it was the same.

If we're using one game to reaffirm signing Darvish would've been a terrible decision does that mean Lynn is a bust too?

That's not a shot at moderation...

I'm pointing out that these "comparison," or "tracking," threads are really just ways to reaffirm positions, often using a SSS as displayed above. I'm all for letting it stand, but lets call a spade a spade here.

I think the point was ... tracking people is fine. We have no issues with that. And I also agree, it's good. I do want to see how well or poorly Darvish does this year as one who wanted to sign him. And I may still be disappointed or relieved we didn't by season's end. But some of the posts hidden were mocking and disrespectful toward posters who thought one way or the other. Not sure why there is need for that and those types of posts won't stand.

Personally, I think ALL innings, games, numbers, etc.... count. Especially the ones with all the pressure on, like the playoffs. SSS is a statistical cop out. Everything counts. Even one game. We all know that a small sampling can change quickly. No need to point it out every time, in my opinion. It is always relevant.

When people point to small sample size, I don't think they mean to suggest that results don't count.

Just that there aren't many grand conclusions that can be drawn from them, as every player who has ever played the game has had awful single game performances.
