Article: Jake Odorizzi Named Opening Day Starter

Recommended Posts

Yeah, that I get, but why a day off BETWEEN the two games with Pittsburgh and why a day off in the middle of the series with Mariners?

That is Pittsburgh's home opener, so scheduled off day applies there.  The off day after the Pittsburgh series is a travel day, I guess?

What is the reasoning for off days in the middle of series?

I understand the first one since they do this all of the time on opening day but the others seem ridiculous.

Yeah all those off days at the beginning of the year seems weird, it always seems to be like this, but wouldn't you think a few extra off days in the middle of the season would make it easier to schedule make up games?

Home opener tickets are special (and expensive). Teams can't reschedule those games for later in the season, they pretty much have to be the next day (and not as a doubleheader).

It does seem unusual that the Twins are participating in 3 home openers this season...

There are 60 teams needed for the 30 home openers. That means the average number each team plays is 2. Some play 1, some play 3. 4 would be unusual; I wonder if that's ever happened.

I thought it was more 2 for everybody. But I could be mistaken. Looks the 2015 Twins did 3 (although the middle one was on a Friday and didn't have an off day following).

I want to say a few years back one team did 5, including their own. I think it was a NL West team because the Rockies home opener is usually late, sometimes into the third week of the year.

The days off are fine. It is the middle of the series part of it that doesn't give teams a rest day after traveling that didn't make sense. But it does with the ability to reschedule the home openers such that those tickets still are the home opener.

I just hope that on the 1st-3rd of June (at home VS Cleveland), the starters are Lynn, Odorizzi and Berrios.  If Gibson pitches during one of those games, I'm going to be spending a lot of time grabbing beers at TF that game ;-)

I know how you feel. I had to suffer through a Colon start in LA last year.

I am betting that Gibson will be a pitcher we like to see this year.

Gibson's not the #2, gang. Think of it this way: The Twins are starting the season mid-rotation. Odorizzi is #3, Gibby's #4.

The real rotation is Berrios, Lynn, Odorizzi and Gibby.

Yeah. The rotation at the start doesn’t mean much. Anyone remember who started game 2 for the Twins in 1991?

Yeah, that had to stink.

I'm not betting on Gibson being anything other than the kind of pitcher Gibson is.  And that's not good.

Of course I had to look it up. Allan Anderson went 7.1 innings at defending AL Champion Oakland, giving up 1 (earned) run to get the win.

Does anyone else have an uneasy feeling about starting in Baltimore again?

Ha!   I am.   If I remember correctly we opened against Baltimore two years ago, got swept, and went on to lose nine straight to start the season.  We all know how that campaign ended!

Oh well... hope springs eternal when all teams are still 0-0 and tied in the standings.

Eh, it doesn't matter. One rainout changes everything.

Besides, if Lynn can wrap up two wins against bad-but-not-awful teams, I'll take it.

You nailed it, Brock.    Early season rain-outs and snow-outs have a way of jumbling rotations big time.     In fact, the the long range weather forecasts for Baltimore, Pittsburgh and especially Minny look perfectly dreadful.    Granted, forecasts can change, but...

...it it too early to be uttering the phrase "26th man" even before the season starts?

Vance Worley was the Twins opening day starter in 2013. That decision and being put into a position to make that decision are why the house cleaning was so badly needed and why it was so clearly overdue. The Twins had 10 different guys start at least 8 games. One had an ERA under 4. Only 3 were under 5. It’s a miracle that team didn’t lose 120 games.

I probably would have gone with Berrios and hope he starts a streak. But that’s me. I don’t know if I love the idea of him pitching in Puerto Rico. He’s still young and emotional. I can see the situation getting the best of him.

They had already been rebuilding for over a year. Ryan was brought back as GM towards the end of 2011. We received Worley as part of the tear down.
