Article: Why I Believe The Twins Are Going To Sign Yu Darvish

Recommended Posts

Beware the curse of Nishi!

Um, how are Darvish, an established and experienced front end MLB pitcher, and Nishi, a one-time, pseudo Japanese 'star' who could never make it in the MLB, even related and worthy of being mentioned in the same conversation?

I really thought the dominoes would start to fall with the Cole trade.  One thing to worry about if this lingers into the early portion of spring training ...

One advantage of a February signing, though, is that the 60-day DL becomes available when pitchers and catchers report. No need to free up a 40-man roster spot, since we have at least one player who will not be healthy at the start of the season.

Not that I think a team would take a risk like that. Just a thought.

I read this article and thought to myself.

"Damn it... Yu is going to sign with the Rangers.

The Rangers have been attached to rumors for Darvish and Arrieta. They have been mentioned as kicking the tires on a Grienke trade.

Jon Daniels has had two public meetings with Darvish.

The Rangers have been listed on the list of 6 teams still in on Darvish.

Jon Daniels should think about public office... the big liar!!!   :)  :)

I’m guessing 3 weeks at the latest.

If I'm guessing the latest I'm going with July, maybe not specifically on Darvish but at this point the possibility that at least one of the top 4 starting pitchers takes it into the regular season doesn't seem unlikely.  I think were to the point where common sense is out the window.  We've seen it with guys like Kendrick Morales.  The other thing that seems possible is one year deals as teams that chance and miss next years free agent class will have money to spend on 2nd and 3rd tier options.

I just read this article and concluded "Yu is going to hold out till mid-season"...

I do think it will be interesting. The market has to shape up, otherwise, I could see a team like the Twins swooping in on Lynne for a below market deal and leaving Darvish out in the cold. I'd rather have Yu, but at one point, I think someone has to blink.

Is this true? Do you have a source? My understanding was that a player couldn't be placed on the 60-day DL until like one day before the start of the regular season.

Nothing would surprise me anymore regarding his signing. He tweeted a pic of him with TX personnel, and I still think he's pulling peoples' legs.

He lives in Texas. And likely some of his former teammates do as well. And likely many are in town preparing for Texas' fan fest this coming weekend. But, maybe he's waiting until then to announce he's rejoining the Rangers. At this point, no one knows anything, and I give Yu and his agent a lot of credit for that ... keeping it pretty quiet ... even though it is MADDENING! :)

Oy. I hope my source is any good. I looked into the ins-and-outs of the DL a few weeks ago, and tucked that little nugget away as a useful milestone of the off-season. But now that I go back to find it, I don't know how authoritative it is.

It's on the Internet, it must be true. That's my source. :)

9. A player cannot be placed on the MLB Emergency Disabled List (60-day DL) after the conclusion of the MLB regular season, and during the post-season and off-season, up until the start of Spring Training (beginning on the date that pitchers & catchers are scheduled to report). A minor league player can be placed on a minor league club's 60-day DL only during his minor league club's regular season.

I think it's a lame attempt at leverage with the other teams in the mix...

Personally, it would be nice if Levine gave him a call and offered to add another 10M or something on it to get him to sign now. He's clearly not happy with any offers. At this point, he should be at a place where he'd be willing to talk.

Or he's enjoying feeling wanted. Which I understand. Especially after feeling like he blew the world series--I could understand him wanting to feel like the most desired person on the planet for a few months.

We could offer him Brian Deunsing to own. That seemed to be the lynch pin on getting so many other deals done in the past, I don't see why it couldn't work now.

I think you are right:

A lot of guys do seem to go on the 60-day DL around opening day, though, but that is probably because they have to miss the first 60 days of the season regardless (spring training days don't count toward the 60), and you can't 60-day DL a guy unless your roster is otherwise full, and a lot of roster decisions are due around the end of spring training anyway (i.e. minor league opt outs, players out of options, etc.).

But it does seem like the Twins could DL Pineda on Feb. 13 and sign a MLB free agent. Although it seems like it would barely be a consideration if the cost of signing him earlier would only be losing Kinley.

Thank you. I wish I had thought of looking for empirical evidence. I even sifted through the CBA, which can be found on-line, and learned all about how players are compensated for taking part in the Home Run Derby, but not this basic detail governing the teams.

And thank you to Nick, as well, for challenging the point. My read on it was shakier than I realized and I would hate, hate, hate to be spreading misinformation.

OK, I did have one other source, which I was too embarrassed to reference: the game Out Of The Park lets me DL guys as soon as Spring Training starts. But they play fast and loose with various rules, so I wouldn't consider them even as definitive as Some Guy On The Internet, so I went with that. :)

I just wonder when he's going to make a decision.  Its three weeks till pitchers start reporting to camps; will he wait until the very end to make a decision and sign?

He is kinda holding the free agent pitching market hostage when it comes to determining contract value, which is what everyone's waiting for.  I just don't want to see the Twins end up with nothing when they could be going after Lynn, Cobb or someone else if he decides to go back to the Rangers.

thought it might be of interest, that's all

I drew the line for myself after a poster suggested he posted the photo for leverage. :)

Other than that, in the absence of anything concrete ... and, actually, in absence of even a whisper from Yu himself ... all we are left with is to speculate based on photos posted on instagram. :)

I'm just offering a counter to the interest. I saw the tweet myself and wondered ... as I said ... in the absence of anything concrete ...

Leaving us up to our own devices ... is that a good thing? ;)
