Levine wittiest GM at texting

A recent NYT article, "Who Needs Trade Talks, These Days General Managers Just Use Emojis", has some references to and quotes from Twin GM Thad Levine.

When Thad Levine, the general manager of the Minnesota Twins, started working in baseball in the late 1990s, most general managers traveled frequently with their team — as well as to the All-Star Game or World Series, and of course to the general managers’ and winter meetings — with the express purpose of meeting face to face with their counterparts to initiate trades.

“But today, we negotiate hundreds of millions of dollars of contracts and make massive trades without ever picking up the phone and speaking directly with one another, let alone meeting face to face,” Levine said. “You kind of learn the personalities of guys — who needs a phone call, who can do it on text, who prefers emails, who likes to be lighthearted. The art of the negotiation has almost been trumped by the art of communication.”

Jerry Dipoto, GM of the Mariners, said that Levine, age 46, "is the wittiest of all his peers when it comes to text messaging."

Emoticon chat seems to work great for trading players to and from Asia, yeah.

With the sheer number of signings by this team, it's fun to see Levine share his secrets to success. I was wondering how he was able to do so much.

Also, the best way to negotiate with the Yankees is on Teamspeak while playing Counter Strike.

The best way to negotiate a trade with Terry Ryan was over a game of pick-up Scrabble.

As Levine said, it's not about negotiation strategy anymore. It's just about memes.

Like this one that helped us get rid of Nolasco. You can't argue with results.

From my perspective, his texting is the most impressive part of his performance. Hope there is more to come....

he did trade for a few pitchers in the mid and high minors. I thought that was fairly savvy, certainly didn’t see much of that from TR in the last few years. But man the way this offseason is going, I would agree... lately this is all we have to talk about

Levine is amazing. He's like a young Terry Ryan with a more analytical background. Great hire.

Um, do you think that you are doing Levine a favor by comparing him to Ryan?  You are not.

Unlike Ryan, he hopefully will not drive the team from 2 WS trophies to contraction, be unwilling to do what it takes to get the team over the top when they were contending, and lead the team to its darkest years since it became a franchise in 1901.

He is way better than Ryan.
